but they've turned into the devil, they have! i know my knitting's far from perfect, but i didn't think it was that bad. i've got 3 splinters and my fingers are really sore!

Splinters? I prefer 30 cm metal ones.

viticella · 05/06/2007 21:04

Were they cheap ones? I bought some Clover bamboo needles and they are smooth as silk.

Each to their own, I still favour Aero's tbh.

warthog · 05/06/2007 22:13

haven't tried clover... i tried addi and pony. i got two more splinters before i threw the lot away.

Loathe bamboo needles, they just don't have the smooth 'slip' of the metal ones.

RubberDuck · 05/06/2007 22:18

I prefer crappy plastic ones too ... not very lentil-weavy am I? Don't mind metal ones. Bamboo ones just don't "slip" enough and I'm always fighting with them (but then I'm a fairly tight knitter)

fillyjonk · 07/06/2007 07:04

oh dear

soreness is possible, you will get used to it

splinters...hmmm...were they all from the SAME needle? have never had a splinter, and i use recycled kebab skewers much of the time...you COULD sand them down, that would sort it out

the best needles are wood. Brittany are nice and reasonably cheap (about £5 a pair IIRC)

fillyjonk · 07/06/2007 07:05

ah yes am quite a loose knitter though, i think

i do normally need to go down a size or two for tension

warthog · 07/06/2007 07:19

no they weren't from the same needle, which was surprising! they also weren't from the same manufacturer and they weren't old. i could understand it if i'd been using them for years and they couldn't take the strain...

i love knitting with wood, but always thought the brittany ones were more expensive. i might have to get some of those...

fillyjonk · 07/06/2007 07:39

well mine were about £5 each but...might have been on sale

there is no SHAME in knitting with metal you jnow

have you considered casein, if you need to be funky?

warthog · 07/06/2007 08:07

eh? casein?

Do bamboo ones click?! One can't knit properly without the click-click of metal is what I say!

florenceuk · 07/06/2007 10:56

I bought a pair of Addi bamboo circulars and was very impressed - lovely cord (I'm sad, aren't I). I find metal ones too heavy and make my gauge too tight. Plastic ones would be OK, but JL only seem to sell bamboo or metal.
