The pattern is for a Jacket, Hat, Mittens and booties and size range is 12" - 22" range. My instinct is to go for the upper size bracket, what would you choose?

Go with your instinct, sizes sound about right.
I’m certainly no expert but I think it’s very lovely that you’re making the effort to give such a lovely gift.

Thanks Puffycat, I've got no first hand experience with babies and how fast/slow they grow but do love crafting. I feel like I tend to exaggerate sizing (they'll grow into it)? I made a hat and booties for a friend's February born baby and they looked huge! This time it's for DP's brother's baby so I'm thinking winter baby plus birthday and Christmas I could give a few bits for each, alongside some shop bought things in case the homemade stuff isn't quite what they hoped for!

I would knit a size 16 , that way it will have something nice n warm to wear its first winter. I always knit first size hat , mitts n bootees . You can knit all this out of 5o gram ball . The parents love the small size and will love the fact u have made an effort. Happy knitting .

Thanks Purl, that sounds like a good plan, the hats, mitts and booties should knit up quick so will make a nice first gift.

Does it give you rough weights or ages on the pattern? I find it easier to go by them. My first DC was too big for all the newborn stuff and my second was at the lower end of the newborn sizing.

I always knit the top size in the prem range for a newborn (14" chest) and then a bigger size too for an autumn/winter baby.

My DD1 was born in the early spring and all the newborn (16" chest) stuff that I had spent months knitting drowned her but a 14" chest cardigan was our saviour.

I know babies grow out of stuff really quickly but I love having something that fits straight away.

Sorry for sitting on the fence Grin

I'm just knitting for a "due any day now baby" and I'm knitting 14". That tends to be my default size for any newborns as unless they're very tiny or really huge it tends to fit and as others have said it's nice to have something that fits straight away. As a guide my three DC ranged from 8lb to 9lb7 and 14" fitted them all for the first couple of weeks.
