If so, bit of a strange question but could you tell me, on average, how much each one would cost to make in terms of yarn and stuffing please?

PREMATURE babies. No idea what a premium baby is!

They ask for very specific yarn and stuffing, I bought one of their fundraising kits. The amount of stuffing comes to pennies if you consider the amount required and the yarn is probably about £1-2

So how much yarn would one octopus need, incewincy?

About a mini skein

It says it makes the baby feel safe:

  • not sure seeing a puce, sea creature bigger than my head on my pillow would make me feel particularly safe, but maybe thats something we grow out of along the way!

I think you can usually get two or three from a 50g ball depending on the style of octopus. Your best bet is to join the Facebook group octopus for a preemie UK. They're all really friendly and will give you loads of advice and all the patterns and information you need are in the group.

Be aware that the criteria for making them is really strict to make sure they're safe for the babies. It usually takes a few tries to make them up to standard even if you're experienced. The ones that don't go to premature babies go to the families of angel babies so all donations go to help someone.

@Mynewname the tentacles remind the babies of the umbilical cord that is the safe feeling. There are some colours and stimulating features they ask you not to use and the reports back are of them being very beneficial.

I didn't think you could sell/donate anything in the UK without a CE mark?

LilithTheKitty · 23/03/2018 13:22

@soulrider The octopuses are made to very specific standards and are checked before they are passed on to the hospitals to make sure the standards are met. They're donated as "aids" not "toys" and are not given to unsupervised babies or babies who are no longer in incubators.

KoshaMangsho · 23/03/2018 13:28

Yes please don’t just make one and give it to the Hospital. It won’t be used. They are made very specifically to very specific standards since they are inside the incubators of often very sick and fragile babies with a high infection risk.
