Crochet blanket with online tutorial

Hi

Can anyone recommend an online tutorial for a really nice, cosy crochet blanket that looks good and is relatively easy to make?

Also, all the tutorials seem to recommend barnet blanket wool but that’s really expensive. Are there any cheaper brands of thick yarn that are just as good?

Thanks

Are you a beginner? I wouldn't waste money on expensive yarns just yet. Anything will do.

James Brett do some really lovely colours and it's affordable. King Cole are also good.

In terms of a blanket tutorial, there are absolutely heaps! What sort of style are you after?

I like Stylecraft for cheap yarn that doesn't feel squeaky and nasty.

Attic24 look on this site. It is amazing and has tutorials. Also you can buy the yarn in sets should you want to follow the colourways precisely. Really simple easy to follow designs.

Don’t do much crocheting these days but I always used really cheap yarn. Whichever crochet stitch or pattern you use the yarn will look good.
Take your time looking at on line tutorials till you find one you’re happy with. Some are way too complicated and crocheting really isn’t hard. A girl at school taught me when I was 8.

Yes, I’m a beginner. I’m working on a blanket at the moment but only using some wool I got free with a magazine.

Thanks for the tips. I’d love to do a really thick, bulky blanket that would look good as a throw but that you can also snuggle up into

Do you have a nearby wool shop? Have a browse around, feel the wools, see which one you like best.

Just reread this thread. It’s much easier to crochet with DK wool or thinner. You might find very thick wool a bit tricky.

I actually find thicker yarn easier, with chunky bamboo hooks which are very comfortable to hold. I'm currently making a blanket with Marriner Aran with 25% wool, using a 6.5 mm hook and working the crazy zigzag stitch throughout. It's very simple and repetitive - ideal for doing in front of the telly of an evening.

In fact, I really don't get the obsession with DK at all. Give me Aran, Chunky or thicker any day, for both crochet and knitting.

The Crochet Crowd YouTube tutorials are very good. I found the corner to corner pattern very easy for a beginner and the tutorial simple to follow. I agree with the others, use an Aran weight wool and the recommended hook size and you'll get a nice chunky warm blanket.

Another vote for Attic 24 ...I love her colour schemes!

I've recently used this tutorial to make my first blanket:

betsymakes.blogspot.co.uk/p/granny-tech.html?m=1

I'm really pleased with it.

I just used Stylecraft Arran -- it is slightly chunkier than the DK.

TroubledTribble28 · 20/03/2018 23:39

I used Stylecraft chunky for a recent blanket and it's very cosy and cuddly, it was absolutely fine to use as I just worked with the corresponding hook. If you're a competent online shopper you can usually get some sort of discount on Black Sheep Wool or similar.

I liked the crochet crowd corner to corner video. Nice and simple to get the hang of and works well with any wool!

A giant granny square or 2 giant squares joined together is lovely and can be done easily with chunky yarn.

I hate joining or seaming so avoid it wherever possible Wink
