Best way to learn crochet and wool that feels nice?

So two requests:

  1. recommendations for best 'teach yourself crochet' resources (apologies, I'm sure this gets asked again and again).

and

  1. I need to find some wool that doesn't give me the heebeegeebees as it pulls through my hands! Maybe something silky? I have tried to crochet once before, but the fluffy dry feeling of the wool goes through me. SHUDDER.

But I'd really like to learn! I think it could be just the distracting, portable hobby I need to get my concentration back on track.

thanks!

DK bamboo is a nice thickness and smoothness for starting out.

Lots to investigate thank you!

I've started with a young woman on YouTube (first google result) and I've now done a few rows of a basic stitch.

I often find it difficult to find the space to get the yarn to pull back through. Will that just come with practice?

And counting! Gosh it's hard to keep track.

And actually, the wool (or whatever this cheapo yarn is) doesn't feel too bad this time. I'm wondering if I tried I'm summer lady time and maybe my hands were a bit swollen with heat or something? You know that feeling I mean?
