Modern cross stitch

I have rediscovered my love of cross stitch and it utterly thrills me. :) I love samplers and modern designs. I'm not into realistic cats or gardens, more geometric, scandi, Danish style.

Anyone up for sharing ideas?

I recently discovered that there are loads of free patterns, and some great kits to buy from a company called DMC. Google their online stuff. Also suprisingly good offerings on Amazon, just search for modern cross stitch. They are often very cheap too!

I always so disappointed with the selection in cross stitch magazines, its a bit old fashioned for me. Check out the frosted pumpkin stitchery, they email you the patterns (American site) they also do year long stitchalongs where you do a bit each month. (Ill attach a pic) I also like the clouds factory, they have fun designs. If you're a disney fan, check out DoNaStitch on etsy. She has some beautiful modern designs. Also Mr X Stitch on Instagram Smile

I can’t be doing with pictures, either. I like to pair up slightly bleak song lyrics with old school border/corner designs I find via Pinterest. I lay the designs out using conditional formatting on an Excel spreadsheet where I’ve made the cells very small squares...

Esty is a great place to look for fun and unusual patterns.

I'm an Arnie fan & these are a couple of projects from Etsy patterns!

Gloss and mischief have some cute kits.

Hobby craft had some nice geometric patterns in their sale a week or so ago too, which surprised me.

Oh, my goodness, these are wonderful suggestions! Hurrah! Lovely, thank you so much. Will look at these when not so tired. :)

I really like stitchrovia/ Emma congdon (sp?)
Nice typography type stuff. I've ordered patterns online as a download and then sourced the threads etc myself.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 20/01/2018 08:54

Ooh placemarking, I love cross stitch but don’t want to do anything twee.

I've just started learning with a kit for a calendar. Next year I might do one based on what really happens each month and stitch the title Fuck My Life Grin

Okay, I've had a chance to go through some of this. Thanks SO MUCH everyone!

DMC website - free patterns are actually quite cool! Lots of geometric stuff and quite nice florals and then some quite funky little bits too. And Hobbycraft has some good ones too.

The Anchor threads website is www.makeitcoats.com/ also has some cool patterns (not many).

Etsy has some nice free patterns to download too - some say they are a few pence to download but then in the description give you a link to a free download.

Clouds Factory looks great. I will definitely be stitching some little Star Wars and Harry Potter stuff for my kids from there.

The Stitchrovia and Emily Peacock stuff looks so lovely but possibly quite time consuming for me right now - I'm liking some of the easier looking ones but might tackle those later when I'm feeling more confident.

I also found a couple of Facebook cross stitch groups, and one of them linked to this site with some quite nice free patterns

Those DMC free patterns are amazing! UrbaneSprawl you've really inspired me to try putting together a similar sort of design with lyrics/border!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 22/01/2018 18:31

Yes to Subversive! I've got their book. Also, Mouseloft mini kits are nice to do in an evening.
I look for Halloween kits too.

Nosleepmakesmetired · 22/01/2018 18:46

Subversive stuff is awesome. Take a look at lakeside needlecraft if you’re going to buy threads. They’re only 59p each compared to Hobbycraft! There’s a good Facebook group for the uk. Cross stitch friends in the uk. Everyone there is lovely.

Etsy is a great place for patterns. Clouds factory, little beach hut, fiddlesticksau and a few others are faves. I’m about to start the giant Harry Potter one from clouds factory! Enjoy. It’s my favourite thing to do in the evening when the babies are asleep!

One of my recent finishes!

Etsy - amazing stuff on there

TheCraicDealer · 22/01/2018 19:16

Stitchrovia is the bomb, I love her stuff. So retro and cool, she's great.

OP you may like stitchsperation from Not On The High Street. The kits aren't cheap but they're funky and modern, only one colour of thread and come with a cool pre-dyed bit of material for your to stitch the design on. I did the two Xmas wreath designs and they fit perfectly into £4 Ikea frames.

I was given a book Feminist Icons Cross Stitch for Christmas. Currently on Frida Kahlo and loving it!

These are some great tips. I've been looking at cross stitch alphabets online as well... Some great ideas that would make it easy to type up my favourite quotes.

MOFAs on FB, it's of "interesting" fibre artists, including X stitch.

OddThomas7 · 30/01/2018 11:46

I also like Satsuma Street: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SatsumaStreet/items

Unlike some Etsy sellers, she actually stitches every design she releases.

Hadn't come across Emily Peacock before - her work looks awesome!

andalittlebitofpixiedust · 30/01/2018 15:47

I love both those suggestions, thanks so much!
