How to make a Roman Blind

Can I interline a roman blind? I would like to interline with one of those thick thermal interlinings but I'm afraid it might just look lumpy does anyone have any experience of doing this please?

Can't advise you yet Neapolitanpink as I haven't made mine yet, I'm not using a kit though and I do think it would be more expensive with a kit.

They brought out a new edition of Encylopaeida of curtains which is why there are plenty of bargains to be had!

Making a blind with dowels and battens is not really much different from making them with a kit. the blind bit is all the same its just the stringing that is different.
The main reason most professionals use the kits is becuase of new safety regulations which means that cords must detach if subjected to excess force to avoid strangulation

Ah of course, I reckoned that I could get away with a non safety one for one of my windows and use the kit for another more accessible window.

The book will be interesting, all of my curtain making books are actually pre 98' believe it or not. I think one of them even has instructions for an Austrian blind! I'm not sure that they will be back in fashion in a hurry.

I've done both the kits and the dowel/cord. I must say I like to see a nice fabric covered batten at the top rather than some plasticky track, but that's only visible for blinds outside the window recess and not really that bad.

If making blinds now I'd use a chaindrive kit with the childsafe features. We have one in our new house and I have to occasionally clip the breakaway ends back onto the rods that's all.

With the kits I still use the lining pocket method for the rods, I don't use the included tape. Also the weighted batten for the bottom of the blind helps it hang nicely.

I prefer the tracks, which weren't around 20 years ago (when I started making them). I have only ever bought M&D kits which are not plasticky they are metal tracks, nicely finished with a choice of chain.

It was all dowels and battons when I was taught to make them too. I'm going to do one of each, well add one of each to the long 'to do' list of sewing.
