Help, I really can't knit!

Pretty much as the title says! My dsd has started knitting at school and is asking for help with it.
No problem I thought, I used to knit! It's like getting back on the horse, right?
I youtubed it, cast on and tried a few rows and I'm crap! I've been at this a week and still end up unravelling after 2 rows!
What am I doing wrong?! Is there an idiot's guide I've missed? Picked up needles, found one pair too thick, the other too thin! My crafty friends are too busy or prefer to crochet!
Help please, I'm persevering but not getting any better!! Confused

Check at your local yarn store - they may do classes, or know of a local knitting group, where you’d be sure to get help and support - and worst case, they’d give you some help there and then, I am sure.

If you are anywhere near Paisley, I’ll happily meet with you and help you.

Thanks STDG, sadly I live a few hundred miles north of you or I'd be very grateful for your help!
We do have a wee local wool shop, but its only open once a week. I'll try in there next time I'm off! And look for local crafting things!
I seriously don;t know what I'm doing wrong! Honestly feel thick!

A lot of libraries have craft and chat groups, or local yarn shops have classes. Some of the yarn shops online have good tutorials, Drops and Purl Solo, Lion brand might too. A couple of good books are Knitty Gritty and Stitch and Bitch, the knitting answer book. There's also a good one aimed at children called Kids learn to knit.

Hold the phones!!
Success!
I searched for UK method of casting on on youtube and its the way my mum used to do it! And I've knitted a wee square!!

Completely fucked up the cast off unfortunately so the last 5 stitches are a mess, but progress!! Grin

thanks tho, I'll check out library for classes!
