Crochet for a beginner

Very interested in learning to crochet. I want to be eventually able to make myself a Sassenach infinity scarf a la Outlander! not paying £45 for one on etsy!

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get started, books/videos etc and a kit list I'd need? I have a voucher for Dunelm so would be handy if could be bought there unless cheap elsewhere.

Many thanks!

hello, what size hook did you begin with?

TarquinGyrfalcon · 25/03/2018 18:37

Im not the thread starter but I'd recommend a size 4 hook and DK yarn if you are a beginner - I find dark colours harder to crochet with so I'd also advise you to use a light colour

Your making great progress OP! I'm another right handed yarn & hook holder. I find it much easier - glad to see there are so many others Grin

Once you are feeling more confident, try some small designs like a Granny Square, so that you get used to following a pattern.

yes I have a size 4mm hook. Whats the best thickness of yarn to start with? No idea!

TarquinGyrfalcon · 25/03/2018 21:33

I'd used double knit yarn with a size 4 hook.

Are those who crochet and knit teaching their daughters? I am trying to teach mine crochet but I am not doing very well. I am not so hot at knitting unless it is a square! Worrield is going to be a lost skill

slowly making progress but not sure why there is space between each row, any ideas? Thanks

Mollysmummy I think they are both becoming more popular. Three women I know who have recently had babies were all given several knitted or crocheted blankets

Looks like you forgot to do a chain one turning chain at the start of each row. fear not, took me ages to work that beauty out when I 1st started!

Also as a beginner remember to count your stitches each time you finish a row. May sound dull and slow but that saved me from odd shaped granny squares! Once you have counted enough and got used to chaining 1 at the start of each row it oddly becomes like second nature as the brain kind of remembers what you need to do :)
