Where and what to buy - pyjama fabric

Hi
Pretty novice at sewing, but I'd like to attempt making the family xmas PJs this year, as I've looked to buy in previous years and nothing has really appealed.
What fabric do I need to look for for pyjamas please? Jersey?
And any shops I should look at - I've started looking on eBay and etsy but not feeling like I've quite found what I want.
Thanks.
Any other advice welcome.

Have you sewn at all before? Knit fabrics can seem harder to sew but don't need finishing on the seams so can be less work. So if you prefer a knit then jersey is good. If you prefer wovens then a nice brushed cotton or wincyette will do the trick. It might actually be better to pick a pattern that looks fairly easy and work from there depending on the recommended fabrics.
Amazon can be good for fabrics, or Minerva Crafts & Fabrics.

Thanks for replying. Not much, and very basic!
So should I look for knit fabrics? Do I put that in the search criteria? Or jersey?
I only have access to a basic sewing machine.

Do you have a good fabric store near you? If so, go in and ask for advice. I like cotton elastane jersey, flannelette and cotton lawn for my PJs.
If you're in East Anglia, I'll PM you a good shop to visit

Llamacorn · 22/09/2017 17:41

I'm doing the same this year and I've actually bought Xmas duvet covers to do it with! Much cheaper, and a nice fleeced cotton.

FABrick · 22/09/2017 17:47

gin, no, I don't think I do. And nowhere near East Anglia, but thank you!

llama, where did you get the duvet covers from?

I have bought these ones from Asda. They aren't here yet but I have had ones from Asda before and rather impressed with the quality. I liked the fact that these ones had the same pattern front and back so I could get more use out of the fabric.

Primark is also a good place to look for the Christmassy/Nordic duvet covers.

This is my first time making pyjama bottoms but they look really simple to do. I was going to pair them with plain white tops and get personalised iron on transfers too I think (I can embroider but I think it would take far too long)

I'm trying to do them quite cheaply as my dc will outgrow them by next year.

I hope this helps!

Great, thanks! Yes, I am also 'cheating' for the tops - DS hates long sleeves so I'm just planning on sewing a simple applique on like this: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/542903606/christmas-pyjamas?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=christmas%20pajamas&ref=sr_gallery_4 on a ready-made plain white vest, and something similar for the rest of us in a mix of short and long sleeves. So just need to make bottoms, which I am hoping isn't crazy complicated!

Oh that's really nice to put on the tops too!

I found a super simple sewing tutorial on Pinterest, just using current pyjama bottoms to make a template from. Looks easy enough and I'm not bad at sewing so I'm sure they will be fine hoping they'll be fine

I'm also planning on making everyone stockings this year - will need to make a start on things soon.

Good luck with your project - will you post a picture once you're finished?

FABrick · 22/09/2017 18:08

Yeah! Or I may do everyone's initials - just the first letter, let's not go overboard! :)

Good luck with both projects! How many have you got to make?
This is one of the reasons I stopped at two kids! :)

Hm, maybe! If I even find fabric I love enough! Do feel free to post pictures too!

Thanks, I may do if I'm happy with the results!

I've got 5 stockings and 5 pyjamas to make (3 dds, dh and I) plus I was going to make the dog and cat little bandanas from the pillow cases to match!!

I quite like the linen/burplap look for stockings with a small fabric trim - I have an idea in my head I just hope it materialises.

I thought about initials too which I like, or I may do surname with family Christmas 2017 on. Only thing is I definitely couldn't use them again next year!

Llamacorn · 22/09/2017 18:32

this is the simple tutorial I found, I suppose it could be tweaked to suit.

I've added a pic of some stockings I like too which I found on Pinterest, I do prefer to neutral look but may add colours for the dc.

Just unpick the '7' next year and replace with an 8! :)

Thanks for the link - looks totally doable even for me! I hadn't gotten that far yet - wanted to see if I could actually find material I liked enough. The fabric looks like uncomfortable cotton though - can't sleep in that - I need something more flexible, which is why I'm wondering if it's jersey I need.

I love the duvet cover idea Llamacorn! I have x4 pairs of kids p.j's to make, they all fairly small though. This is definitely the time of year to start.
