How quickly can I learn to crochet and make a baby blanket?

I'm nearly 31 weeks pregnant and I've wanted to learn to crochet for ages. My SIL had a go at teaching me but I've forgotten what she taught me and she lives far away so I'm back to square one. Should I just forget about making my own baby blanket?

Hi. There are some really simple but beautiful patterns on ravelry.com, and online tutorials. The easiest one would be a granny square pattern as that is just basically round and round in a simple pattern but looks ace. There is a site called crocheting for dummies with step by step instructions and loads of youtube tutorials. Congratulations by the way. Xx

If you've already learned but forgotten you'll probably pick it up again quite quickly. Other posters recommend Bella Coco (I'm old school and learned in the days before the internet)

I've used a pattern that used only two stitches - UK dc and trebles. I'll have a look for it and post a link if I can find it. I think it's made in baby Aran so grew quite quickly.

Yes to Bella Coco. I learnt a granny square from her and made a doll's blanket in 2 evenings.

Thank you all for your replies. TheWoollybacksWife if you do find it then I'd appreciate a link😊 Thank you. Exciting stuff!!!

If you can ask around and find someone who can show you again, or a yarn/craft store for a refresher lesson, it would probably be the fastest way to get back to it. I personally find online videos hard to follow.

Second the rec for ravelry.com, tons of brilliant free patterns and can search by difficulty.

Congrats, have fun!

Yes you totally can - I also recommend Bella Coco for a basic granny square tutorial on you tube. I had to watch the video quite a lot, and rewind some bits but it was relatively easy to pick up.

Much more forgiving for a beginner than knitting!

I went to poundland/wilcos to get cheap wool and a crochet needle to practise with, then bought the proper wool online from Wool Warehouse. Picking the colours was great fun - pinterest is good for ideas and there was a great thread here where a lovely mumsnetter posted colours that go well together. I'll try and find it for you.

I'm due a couple of days after you - I have 7 squares done of the blanket. Your thread has reminded me to get back into it! I'm not sure how many squares I need, am slightly freestyling couldn't make sense of the patterns

I started teaching myself last Monday from a beginners book and you tube. I like Bella coco videos. So far I've made baby an embarrassing hat and just started a granny square blanket. Safe to say I'm addicted!

Definitely recommend Bella Coco .
I am a newbie to crotchet, but it really helped to get me going
I am making this at the moment , and it is very straightforward , just one row pattern once you get beyond the first row :)

Niblet that is an adorable photo! Now I want to make embarassing hats Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 06/09/2017 09:16

This is the blanket. She makes a big size but gives instructions on how to make it any size you want. I found it worked up quickly in double knitting yarn but super quick in Aran, just adjust the size of your hook to suit (6mm from memory). It uses US terms but as long as you know the stitches you are good to go.

Shout out if you need advice once you start. There are loads of Arts and Crafts crocheters that will help.

TheWeeWitch · 06/09/2017 09:58

I learnt to crochet from this video- it's a super easy pattern with only two stitches to learn.

DeadButDelicious · 06/09/2017 11:23

YouTube, YouTube, YouTube! There are loads of video tutorials on there, you can pause and rewind and do it at your own pace, a blanket is a great thing to start with! Lots of simple repetition. You could also pick up a crochet magazine, they sometimes come with a hook or a little kit (simply crochet is great for this) and have a handy little stitch guide in the back if you do better with diagrams than video. Good luck! Do show us your progress!

Last Monday, Niblet? I've been teaching myself for years and can still only do double crochet.
Sakura, your baby needs an embarrassing hat!
