Cushion covers for a novice

Hi, I have a sewing machine gathering dust in the cupboard and am determined to get using it. I have 2 40cm x 40cm cushions that need covers, trouble is I haven't got a clue what I'm doing? Anyone know any good fabric shops online? What sort of fabric should I be looking for? And how much? I saw some on eBay I liked, 1/2 metre for £9.50, is that ok value? All help massively appreciated!

Whether that's good value depends on the fabric. It's not super cheap, certainly, but it might be really fancy fabric?

I think you could probably use most types of fabric: curtain or dressmaking.

There are loads of fabric places online. Terry's fabrics and Fabric Godmother are a couple of good ones I know of. But you might be better to go an actual shop where someone will be able to advise you.

Simplest option would be an envelope-style - no zips needed or whatever. There are loads of tutorials online.

Disclaimer: beginner here.

Thanks high love, appreciate the help. I think the fabric I like is fancy ( typical me!) I shall go for the envelope style as you suggest

How long have you been sewing? What have you made so far?

I found this the best tutorial when I made my first cushion cover & always refer back to it! So simple and she makes it all very clear.

Ps if the fabric is fancy, you can go for a smaller piece for the front square and cheaper stuff for the back parts (which also take up more fabric because they need to overlap).

Oh brilliant dryheave, I will check that one out and thanks for the tip, I wouldn't have thought of doing that with the fabric
