Help - how would you read this knitting pattern...

Am currently knitting a cardigan for DD and am on the sleeve. Pattern reads as follows;

Change to 6.5mm needles and working in st-st (throughout) cont until sleeve measures 13cm from beg of 2 x 2 rib, ending with a ws row. Inc 1 stitch at each end of next and every foll 8th row to 44 stitches.

Would you read that as two sep instructions ie knit to 13 cm and THEN start increasing or

increase on every 8th row WHILST knitting to 13cm.

I have done the first and sleeve is waaaay too long.

Help!

I would have done what you did
If it is supposed to be otherwise the instructions need to be clearer!!

wangle99 · 30/03/2007 21:59

Thanks, that is what I thought! I would consider myself an experienced knitter but this sleeve is definately wrong!

Will have to undo and rethink!

It reads like 2 sepreate instructions but if you done that already with one sleeve and its too long I can only suggest to do them at the same time.

Hmm yes, I think it is badly written but means you need to increase whilst knitting to 13cm etc.

Do you shape the armhole after that? Does it sound like rib + 13cm + armhole shaping will make the sleeve the right length?

tigersEasterchick · 30/03/2007 22:01

I agree - you've done it right

Tho it may not look right - perhaps the pattern is wrong ..?

Tamum · 30/03/2007 22:02

I would agree that the way you did it is the way that it is written, but it would be unusual(ish) to have a straight piece as long as that before the shaping, unless you already have lots of stitches on the needle when you change to the 6.5mm needles. Is there a schematic with the pattern? If so, so the sleeves look as though they increase gradually throughout, or is there a straight bit at the start?

wangle99 · 30/03/2007 22:03

I did wonder if the pattern could be wrong, it's one of Sirdar's newish ones - 2189.

I just cannot see what I've done wrong!

Arghg

This is the pattern. Sorry I haven't sussed links yet.

There is the fox wool at the 'cuff' of the sleeve and then the sleeve. Can't see from the pattern if it's straight or not.

Getting rather annoyed now!

As it is a current pattern could you contact Sirdar and ask them?

Tamum · 30/03/2007 22:10

I just found it but I could see either. I think you probably just have to try the other way and see, or contact Sirdar as Yurtgirl suggests.

Tamum · 30/03/2007 22:10

couldn't

wheresthehamster · 30/03/2007 22:11

I think most sleeves start increasing as soon as you finish the cuff so I think I would interpret the pattern as increasing whilst knitting up to 13cm.

franke · 30/03/2007 22:17

Is there a little diagram of the sleeve piece which tells you what the finished dimensions of that piece should be? The sleeves do look quite long on the photo and they are raglan if that makes any difference.

(I would have read it the same way you did, btw)

wangle99 · 30/03/2007 22:25

I will contact Sirdar I think, its really odd never had a problem with a pattern before!

Thanks for your help - I'll let you know what they say!

Have reread the pattern this morning and checked it against the knitting and I think it is me having made a mistake

My 13 cm seems longer and I appear to have knitted 8 rows before increasing at all. Have undone and will reknit and see how it turns out.

I will let you know. Feel very embarrassed as you were so helpful last night
