Knitting question

What's the easiest way of knitting a pattern into a square of knitting? I want to make some squares for a baby blanket then knit them all together and wanted to knit some squares with the baby's initial knitted in. I have found a pattern for the letter online but it's just telling me which stitches to change if that makes sense?
If I purl all the normal stitches then knit for the letter stitches would this be enough of a difference to actually notice? Sorry if this isn't making sense I'm not very good with all the terminology I just taught myself to knit by watching YouTube!
Thanks

I'd do it slightly differently - stocking stitch (alternate rows of knit and purl) the background stitches and garter stitch (ever row knit) the letter stitches but other than that I agree completely with your plan Grin

Just make sure that your square can accommodate the width and height of your letter with at least 4 unpatterned rows at the top and bottom and a margin of at least 5 plain stitches at either side or your letter will get lost once the blanket is sewn up.

If you have got the patience I would write your pattern out before you start knitting. So (for example)...

Cast on (say) 45 stitches
R1 knit
R2 purl
R3 knit
R4 purl
R5 knit
R6 purl 18 stitches knit 9 stitches purl 18 stitches
and so on until your cast off row. That way you have a pattern to refer to for every square.

The people who post in this section are incredibly helpful and someone will always help if you are stuck. You can also post on the Woolly Hugs part of the site and ask someone for help. The threads there are faster moving and populated by knitters and crocheters too.

I also meant to say that squares knitted in stocking stitch curl up. This is perfectly normal and once they are seen together and a border added they behave themselves.

Thank you. I realised I need to do one row purl then one row knit to achieve the purl look. I kept wondering why I was getting it wrong and why didn't it look like purl. So I'm on take two and I've got the hang of it now. I've had to adapt the template slightly as now obviously everything needs to be an even number of rows but I've written out my pattern and it shouldn't take long as it's 31 stitches across. Thank you, this is the first time I haven't followed a proper pattern so was a bit clueless at first.
