Knitting, boring question - gauge messed up. Will this work?

Hi, I've started the back of a raglan jumper. Pattern calls for size 4 needles for hem, then 4.5 needles after that.
I've only knitted almost to the arm hole with the size 4 (doh) I've measured what size it will be if I continue and it should fit around waist, will be a little snug however think it may be too tight around the bust.

Would it look strange if i switched up to 4.5 now? I have 8-10cm to knit until I reach armholes, but I really haven't got the heart to unravel and start over again.

Also when I do the front should I knit up to the same point in size 4, then switch. I'd do the arms in 4.5s. Tia, hope someone has a positive outlook on this.

Disclaimer: I haven't tried this sort of rescue operation so this is a bit hypothetical!

You could change needle sizes now but it might be a bit obvious. If you do that I agree that switching at the equivalent point on the front would be sensible.

As an alternative: how are you shaping the bust? If you are worried about tightness there, perhaps you could put in some extra increases/short rows on the front to compensate.

Depending on the yarn you're using, you might also be able to get the back closer to the intended size with some aggressive blocking.

Id unravel and start again. Sorry.

your resulting fabric will be looser on larger needles so it'll look very strange. even though it's just one needle size you will be able to see it.

best thing is always do a gauge swatch and check you're getting the right gauge that the pattern calls for.

the needle size is only an estimate. everyone knits differently. it'd be like saying you have to wear a size 12 dress, regardless of who you are. nonsensical.

the swatch is a pain, but it'll save you days of potential problems.

Yes but the mistake was in forgetting to swap needles, not in failing to swatch.
OP, I hope you redid it , it's the only way!

Unravel and start again Flowers

Footle - you are quite right and I stand corrected.
