Joining yarn

I tend to do very small projects (socks) so I don't need to start a new ball of yarn! I'm knitting baby hats for a local hospital. I can get 1 and 2/3 out of a ball! Then what? I'm knitting on dpn to avoid seams. These hats will also be washed quite a bit as they are for use on a ward. What method would be best to join the new yarn securely without leaving an uncomfortable lump!

Google 'Russian join'. It's strong and avoid the need to weave in ends later on.

Thanks. Will have a look.

Knit both yarns for about 12 stitches then weave the ends in at the end.

Thanks Flying.
I'm such a novice!

I have never heard of the Russian thing, I am knitting a multi coloured thing at the minute, this, I am so doing that joining technique.
