Using satin and lace fabric to make a dress for dd. Any tips on achieving a good finish please. I've got a fine needle for the machine and Sylko thread. How do I choose the correct tension and stitch length?

I'd use some fabric scraps to test tension and stitch length. Starch spray may help you cutting out too, it may be easier to not cut on the sold either - have fun!

test the tension, depends on your machine but your regular normal tension should be ok. I use a 3mm stitch length. satin can be slipery and if your having problems, pin the fabric to tissue paper and that really helps.

I wouldn't use Sylko thread. Unless its been re-branded that was a cotton thread made by Coats. Assuming your satin fabric is a man made fibre you'll get a better result with Gutermann Polyester thread. If your satin is real silk Polyester thread is still fine to use or you could splash out on silk thread which is lovely for a special dress.

Use fine pins and Schmetz sharp needle according to weight of fabric.

If your fabric is very slippery cut on single layer so if any pieces say place on fold you will need the trace a mirror image of pattern piece. Pin fabric to tissue paper. Use stitch and tear to machine stitching. Play with stitch length and tension on scraps first.
