Overlocker recommendation

Can anyone recommend me an overlocker please?

I really want to sew stretchy fabrics, velvet and jersey so need one don't I....

I can't recommend a specific one but I do know that lidl sometimes sell a singer model for £129 which is about half the usual retail price for that model. I don't know when they next plan to be selling them but it might be worth keeping an eye out if your not in a hurry. I got one last time they were selling them. If your machine has a stretch stitch function you can see stretchy fabrics easily with that too.

I got one grom lidl just before christmas, my local one still had some in last week.

It seems ok, has 3 year gurantee. Took some time setting it up, but I've never used an overlocker before, so think this would be the case no matter what overlocker I got.

You don't need an overlocker, you can use the zigzag stitch or overlock stitch on your regular machine. Plus twin needle for hemming, which you'll need to do even if you get an overlocker. But I do love mine. I have the brother 1034D, I think - £150 on amazon.

I have a Toyota overlocker, for an overlocker it's relatively easy to thread compared to the industrial machines I've used as it's colour coded with an threading guide on the drop down flap at the front.
Great for velvets, jersey fabrics, most fabrics really. I've had mine for at least ten years and it has never let me down once. The only maintenance needed has been oiling and a new set of knives.

My machine is very basic- it's probably 60 years old! Zig zag and a straight stitch- that's it!

Check reviews before buying from the British sewing centre as I haven't heard good things about them.

I have a Brother 1034D and would highly recommend it. I did lots of research before buying and it always came up recommended and has tonnes of great reviews. It's extremely easy to use and gives excellent results.

A basic Bernini OL if you can afford around £400, otherwise the Lidl one

The Singer ones have come up in Lidl around October in previous years, along with big cheap reels of thread. I got one in 2015, I'm very pleased with it. It's one of those things, you can manage without it but once you have one you find reasons to use it. I worked out the rolled hem to shorten a dress for a friend for example. It gives a very professional finish.

I did a short afternoon course at a local sewing shop which helped a lot with threading up.

I was in Lidl this weekend and they had a big stack of the Singer ones. I resisted ... just. Not sure whether it was the right decision!

Yes my mum said her Lidl had them in too. Maybe they over ordered. I should go for it!

Aldi didn't have them in. What a surprise!! Tomorrow I'll try Lidl ;)

Heading towards the Bernina just because I feel like a treat.

If you can afford one I would got for a Bernina. I could afford one but tried to be economical and bought a cheaper (£240 from memory) overlocker as my first one.

I still hankered after the Bernina though and three years later I sold it and bought a Bernina 1150 which is so refined, quiet, still, the thread never breaks. Just a really lovely machine.

The first one was false economy for me, I keep my machines forever usually.
