my ideal wool shop

would be over several floors, packed floor to ceiling with yarn and have little ladders on rails so you could root around in the top shelves.

it would have a whole range from really cheap to ultra expensive and would have every colour conceivable so that you could actually buy several matching yarns in the same brand for eg. cath kidston rip-offs or knit a kaffe fassett jersey using the colours he suggests.

it would have a tea shop at the back where you could scour mags and patterns for your next project whilst sipping piping hot tea and gobbling gateaux.

it would have directories of yarn according to washing instructions (i'm sick of finding gorgeous wool for my dd only to find it has to be hand washed at half moon while the wind is blowing from the north east and dried flat in a room with bouquets of lavender and an ambient temp of 12 deg), and listings of which yarn is appropriate for a needle size.

it would be open late a couple of nights a week for knitting groups or just to finish ufo's.

would you shop there?

what would your ideal be?

Oh, that would be heaven, wouldn't it . Perhaps we could all get our acts together to go to a Rowan workshop at Holmfirth at the same time? It's so hard with little children though, isn't it- I'm only now at the stage where I feel I could contemplate something like that. I am plotting ways of subverting our summer holiday so that it takes in GetKnitted, but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to sell Brislington as an attractive destination....

Tamum · 25/02/2007 19:13

I know Bristol well Filly, I grew up in Somerset, but Brislington I fear is not so hot, or wasn't when I was a kid. You're right though, I could sell it as a trip to Bristol probably

Fio, you're on, it would be lovely- Tatties, are you game for it too? It's near Bradford

Tatties · 25/02/2007 19:14

That's near me!

Tamum · 25/02/2007 19:15

Anyway Tamum I am of you

Tamum · 25/02/2007 19:20

That's alright then

Cloudhopper · 25/02/2007 19:22

I just love the sound of your shop, and I would definitely be interested.

My local shop is lovely, very helpful, child friendly (well, apart from the other customers who kept tutting, but I understood in a way that they were in their own world and we were in the 'way'). Their wools are gorgeous.

This thread has inspired me to try to join their knitting group on a Tuesday.

But a cafe - that really would be nice. Imagine on a child free afternoon, sitting knitting peacefully with a coffee with other knitters.

Fillyjonk · 25/02/2007 19:24

well

get knitted is near me

so ner

Cloudhopper · 25/02/2007 19:35

God, reading that back it sounds smug. No..... because I am in South London/Surrey borders, that was all, and I thought everyone was bemoaning the desert of nice wool shops.

I have to say that Texere yarns looks brilliant. Thank you for the link - I will have to get some stuff online - once I have finished my current WIP of course.

I'd love to do that if it was one of their open weekends- I can't do it midweek, but a Saturday or Sunday would be heaven

Tatties · 26/02/2007 19:02

wartywarthog · 26/02/2007 19:35

Heaven for me is
an afterlife
filled with clouds and clouds of wool
and me on a fluffy eyelash cloud
just
knitting...

ok - found another requirement:

yarns for dyeing, plus loads and loads of different dyes - anything you care to dream up.

perhaps a yarn dyeing service too, for the lazy / scared among us...
