Wool or acrylic for "heirloom" blankets?

Hi,

I wondered if anyone could advise on the best type of wool to use for blankets that will be kept for a long time. (And also any tips on how best to prepare them/store them would be appreciated.)

Sorry, it sounds a bit gloomy, but basically I have incurable cancer. I want to make some blankets for my sister and cousins, in case they have children after my death. The youngest is ten so they'll potentially be stored for quite a long time before use.

Thank you in advance for any advice :)

Patons and Scahanmeyr (sp?) are the same company I reckon.
The "Atlantis" (varigated blue) exists in both and is also the same number....bought from both, wool is identical!

This is such an adorable idea. I would go for whatever feels good in your hands that you enjoy working with and choose the colours you are drawn to. I would feel free to make each blanket different and probs make a separate visit to the wool shop for each one.

I think it can be emotionally satisfying to be creative in this way and I hope it brings you joy OP.

Thank you Snog. That sounds like a nice idea.

My fear is that people will be competitive or take offence if they think someone else's blanket is nicer. But I suppose that's their problem really!

Zing I've not used either of those brands. But interesting there are others with overlap. I'm not very adventurous really. I mostly use Stylecraft Special and the Woolly Hugs wools. Though a friend bought me some chunky Rico and a pattern for a scarf. It uses 10mm needles, which I've not used before. I'm trying to finish all my current projects before I start anything else Grin

I'm going to post a few pattern ideas here so I don't lose them or forget. I could probably learn to use Ravelry more efficiently, but this seems easier at the mo :)

I think I might make this Tropical delight blanket for my sister. She's currently quite sure she won't have children. I really don't know if she will change her mind. And thinking about it too much makes my heart ache. I figured if she doesn't have any then she can use it as a decorative throw or something. It's not a babyish design. And if she did have a baby and it was a boy, I can't imagine she would worry about using a flowery blanket.

Ideas for other relatives:

Star light star bright - I've not used 4ply before so that would be an interesting challenge...

Stars on the sea

Dream catcher blanket

I'm doing the Around the Bases CAL at the mo and it was the first time I've done stacked grannies. I wondered about that with one main colour then two or three alternating colours for the little pops of colour between rows. I think that could look quite effective. Maybe a pale green with a couple of darker greens.

What about the Rowan apple tree blanket - I have made this one and it is not too hard, and looks good.

Ooh that's beautiful! Thank you, I've added it to my Ravelry library :)

I started a thread last week (also in Arts & Crafts) where I've been posting photos of different colour palettes.
All SS DK, but I thought you might be interested if you're looking for colour inspiration.

(Hot choc was yum. I'll reply tomorrow. Sleep well)
