Which wool?!!!

Hi
I'm having some woollen overpants to go over reusable nappies made for me, and was wondering which wool I should go for? I presume it has to be actual wool off a real sheep but I have no idea!! Should it be a bog standard sheep wool or something angora/merino like? Any advice gratefully received!!!

I think wool is quite scratchy ... but someone more knowledgeable will be along soon I'm sure

NotQuiteCockney · 15/01/2007 19:11

Def not angora, it won't wear well. (Ditto cashmere, in case you're actually made of money!)

I think these do have to be actual wool.

I'd probably go for merino, as that is proper wool, just from a special breed of sheep, so not as scratchy.

Oh, think about how you're going to want to wash it when thinking about the wool type - some wools are more machine-washable than others.

I used marino last timed and it kits lovely....reminds me I must get some more to knit sa pair of longies for dd

junkinmytrunk · 15/01/2007 19:19

or merino even!

redclover79 · 15/01/2007 21:57

Thanks everyone! So, merino then!? Do you kind of handwash it/soak it overnight in lanolin solution? I think I read that somewhere...

I soak mine in lanoline overnight.

Just got back from birmingham and got some lovely merino in pink and in purple to do some longies for dd2

Oh don't get me started on yarn shopping. Here are a few online wool shops (I'm not too good at links but you can google these):

www.getknitted.com
www.ethknits.co.uk
www.colourway.co.uk
www.laughinghens.com
www.cucumberpatch.co.uk
www.kangaroo.uk.com
www.texere.co.uk (look for King Cole yarns)
www.colinette.com (check out the Cadenza!)
www.woollyworkshop.co.uk

I've ordered from all these no problems.

Debbie Bliss, Jaeger, Rowan, Sublime all do pure, soft merino type wool yarns - can you not get to a branch of John Lewis which should have an enormous choice?

You don't say what thickness of yarn you need, if it is a US pattern you may need Worsted (between Aran and DK) in which case look at something like Getknitted.com's Cascade 220?

redclover79 · 19/02/2007 16:37

Thought I'd reignite this one! So, the pattern chosen requires worsted weight handwash or dry clean 100% wool yarn (NOT superwash)... what does that mean and where would I get it?!! I have no idea about wool!! I'm going back to look at some of the online stores listed to see what I can find... Thanks!
