All I can find are crochet patterns. Want to knit a storage basket.

And what yarn would be best?

You can felt one. Knit and then felt to give it a big of rigidity. I think knit fabric is floppier than crochet which means the knit shape on its own won't hold shape. You do have to factor in shrinkage though - I made what I thought would be handbag size, and when felted it was just big enough to hold 1 dvd case!

Try Ravelry, if you haven't already. But I agree that getting it to hold its shape will be the issue. You would probably have to starch it, I guess.

Hmm may be the excuse I need to learn crochet.

That's the spirit!

Don't see why not. You could make a frame from a wire coat hanger if you wanted.

There is a Spanish make of yarn called Katia. They also produce seasonal pattern books. Have a look at their baskets. Very nice.

I have crocheted baskets which are quite sturdy and stand up well on their own. I'm sure you could knit one just as well but might have to use circular needles. You can use chunky or just double Aran or dk yarn

Meant to say use two strands of yarn together. Here's a picture of some of mine ... the stripy one is made from cheap DK which I doubled, and the others are doubled Aran.
