Here is a pattern I wrote. Dunno if it's trendy. There are loads of free patterns online, if you say what sort of thing you want to make, we can probably be more helpful.

that hat looks lovely NQC!! but I don't have any circular needles and have never knitted in the round.

Just want a nice easy to knit hat.
Everything I seem to find looks like something that my mum would have dressed me up in the 1970's.

Just something more up to date pls on straight needles

Circulars aren't expensive, only a couple of pound. Knitting in the round is REALLY easy and takes no time to pick up. I prefer it to straight needles tbh, and you don't have the seams to deal with at the end.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2006 12:41

It's not very hard to change a pattern from knit in the round to flat. But easier maybe to start with something flat.

This site is very modern. Here is a list of baby hats.

You will probably find they are mostly knitted in the round, though. Knitting in the round is really easy and is the nicest way to make a hat, imo and ime.

junkinmytrunk · 13/12/2006 12:47

thanks I'll have a good look at those

This one is particularly cute. But knitted in the round, and maybe a bit tricky.

Oh, and here's a really sweet hat, not knitted in the round, that absolutely doesn't look like something you wore in the 70s. But it might not be to your taste

junkinmytrunk · 13/12/2006 12:54

that squid hat is fab! Might have to try that one for my nephew.

Looks like i'm off to get circular needles tho, all the cute ones are in the round

Um, probably should point out, if you're doing anything in the round, you need circulars and 4-5 dpns in the same size, otherwise you're stuck when you start decreasing.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 13/12/2006 13:23

I still smile when Isee the green hat BabyDragon has, It just about fits her still although it's difficult to tell as she keeps pulling hats off.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2006 14:02

Oh, I'm glad she likes it. It's all scaley, isn't it?

Oh, the costume went into school today, that's a very popular costume now. How many nativities has it been in?

GiraffeGotTheLastRoomInTheInn · 13/12/2006 16:32

I only use one circular for a hat, not dps at all. You need to get a fairly long circular (at least 80cm) and then look at the Magic loop method video here.

DonnerDasherDancerDior · 13/12/2006 16:37

NQC - I'm really impressed with that hat youi designed. It's FAB. I wish I could knit. I wouldn't even know where to start. Can you give me a list of beginner's necessary items, like what size needels to buy etc...please?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 13/12/2006 16:51

Yes, a green scaley hat This will be the Shepherd costume's 4th nativity. It's a veteran.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2006 17:38

Dior, there's a lovely site with videos to teach you knitting at www.knittinghelp.com.

The simplest thing to start with is 4mm needles and some double-knitting yarn. It knits up pretty fast. You might want to try cotton or wool as a first fibre.

Learning to knit is an uphill battle, but I only started about two years ago, and found I was reasonably competant within about a year.

(Giraffe, that's another option. So she needs: a 30 or 40cm circular, and either a set of DPNs or a very long circular. I keep meaning to learn magic loop (or the two-circular method, or something), but haven't got the habit, and have got used to DPNs in the interim.)

Thanks NQC
