Crochet questions - PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

Hi Smile

I have very recently started crocheting and am finally starting to get the hang of it (kind of).

I am trying to make granny squares that I will eventually add to in a different colour to join as a blanket, but my squares seem to be different sizes.
I am using the same amount of stitches and doing the same amount of rows on each one, but some seem to be tight and compact and others the holes are big and the stitches seem looser.

Please help. If they're not the same size they're not going to line up to make a blanket. Is there an easy trick for this?

Thank you!

Right, firstly, I am going to ask you the crochet equivalent of asking whether you tried turning your computer on and off again. Bear with me.

The yarns you're using, are they the same weight/thickness? To standardise your squares, you need the same wool, the same crochet hook, same stitches and same number of rows.

If those are all the same, I suspect the issue is simply that you're just getting the hang of it. It takes repetitive crocheting to get your hands into a rhythm and your stitches regular. What's happening is entirely normal, and this is why new learners are advised to make a squared blanket first. They're easy to fix and still look wonderful if the squares are of different sizes. Wink

Keep making squares and worry about sewing them together later. You'll find a way to arrange them. Everyone does!

Thank you!
Yes, all the squares are being made from the same ball of yarn and with the same hook so it's definatley me that's inconsistent!! It's so frustrating because I'm a perfectionist I want it to look good, but you're right, I'm sure I'll manage to make something nice in the end.

What is your yarn? Acrylic or wool? (or a mix?) as you may be able to "block" the smaller squares larger before you sew them together.

By "block" - I mean the way you "iron" your knitted and crocheted pieces to finish them (But never actually iron anything!!)

So for acrylic you can pin the squares on your ironing board to the same size and carefully steam with the iron (don't let iron touch them). Wool or wool mix, pin with pins laid flat and put a well wrung out (ie damp but not wet) towel/tea towel over the top and leave to dry for 24 hours.
