Art of Crochet Magazine?

Anybody got this?

Last year I had a Simply Crochet magazine subscription for Christmas, it was good if a little poncey! but there were quite a lot of mistakes in the patterns and realistically not much in them that I would bother to make at home. Free gifts were pretty good though.

Now my subscription is up and I am not sure whether to get the same again or go for something different (still crochet).

I have looked at the Art of Crochet and it looks good but expensive overall (120 parts) I was dithering so decided to get the first few to see if it is any good....local shops didn't have it, so I have started the subscription which can be cancelled at any time so if it is rubbish I'll just get the first few and the free gifts!

Anybody else? What did you think of it? Would you recommend anything else?

Hi, I don't get any mags as so many patterns are available online these days. However when I have purchased one off patterns they have often come from Interweave magazine so that may be worth a look as it isn't really aimed at the beginner as so many other mags seem to be which makes them a bit samey. Is the Art of Crochet one of those partworks where they dripfeed info for the next 5 years?

ShortyShortLegs · 14/09/2015 19:59

Lol, the granny square blanket that you get the yarn and pattern for is drip-fed for 120 weeks! There are other patterns in the issues too, plus online tutorials, etc.

I'll have a look at Interweave, thankyou.

Inside Crochet is similar to Simply Crochet but slightly less poncey/twee. No free gifts though :)

Alfieisnoisy · 14/09/2015 20:59

I've just subscribed, I am awful though as I simply subscribe until I've had all the free gifts then cancel Blush.

The first edition showed a mock up of the blanket/throw and so I now have a colour guide.

ShortyShortLegs · 14/09/2015 21:18

Oh no, I've just seen they have the Art Therapy magazine on there too....might have to subscribe to that too!

I was thinking the same Alfieisnoisy....subscribe long enough to get the free gifts and then I am sure I can carry on with the blanket by looking at the mock up if the magazine is not very good!

Love crochet is my favourite mag, it's the crochet version of the love knitting mag.
It is always full of lovely patterns although unlike Simply Crochet you don't get a free give.
The art of crochet ws rather disappointing, the free yarn is cheap and scratchy as was the hook. For 99p however I couldn't resist

For the same price as a magazine The Works do alot of crochet books in store and online. most are between £4 and £6. Magazines are too full of adverts for my liking.

ShortyShortLegs · 15/09/2015 13:12

I have a few books, I've been crocheting for three years (wish I'd started when the kids were babies!) and the thing is, if I don't get a subscription then I won't get any at all. DH is buying it for me for Christmas, I buy him a subscription for his birthday.....if I have to get a weekly/monthly magazine from the shops then I will feel guilty about spending that amount on something frivolous for myself!

The Interweave magazines always have lovely original patterns and if you sign up to CrochetMe or whatever it's called you get access to their pattern archive and a weekly/daily email IIRC. Just the yarns are often US ones and you may need to get a bit creative substituting them. Then you could spend your money on lovely Clover hooks and some nice yarn from John Lewis.

I'd also say Interweave's Crochet:

www.interweave.com/Magazines/

Although beware the different US terminology!

You can subscribe via a UK supplier, like P & M woolcraft

www.pmwoolcraft.co.uk/

Or direct, or as an e mag, I'm guessing as I know their other titles are available for PC or iPad.

JoffreyBaratheon · 17/09/2015 11:07

As for substituting yarns for US, that's very straightforward if you search the yarn on Ravlery.com's 'Yarns' tabs you can easily find equivalents.
