Lovely, soft, washable (and not too expensive) yarn for a baby blanket?

Any recommendations?

I really rate stylecraft special DK but want something a bit more special for DFriend's baby. I just want something in a neutral colour (white or cream) that will be really soft and not cost a fortune.

Hi sirdar snuggy is good for baby stuff, or ice yarns. You can get both off amazon or ebay.

I haven't used it but Cascade 220 superwash is very popular, here. It's reasonable value as it's 100g balls. Also SC30 (or whatever the current issue number of Simply Crochet is) gets you 10% off.

I have used Sublime Cashmere Merino Silk and it's as soft as fluffy kittens, but it's only washable at 30C so I'm not sure it would be hard wearing enough. It also might be too expensive.

Snuggly even Blush

I'm just finishing a baby blanket in Drops Merino Extra fine (100% wool). I bought it from Wool Warehouse at £3.20 for a 50g ball and I used 9 balls to make a pram blanket measuring approximately 60cm x 80cm - so it worked out at about £30. I made mine in two shades of grey and lemon but they have a lovely cream colour.

Oh, yes, I have used Drops Merino extra fine too, and it was lovely and soft. I haven't tried washing it though.

I'd vote for Sirdar Snuggly as well, although Cascade is nice too.

I would be somewhat cautious about knitting in white or cream though - you don't want the new parents to be too nervous about getting something on the handknitted creation that they never use it. If you want a neutral because you don't know the baby's sex, green, grey or yellow are good choices - if grey you can always snazz it up a bit with pink or blue on the edges once the baby is born.

the Women's Institute branded stuff in Hobbycraft is really nice, and most of their stuff is on 3 for 2, lots of DK and some finer 4ply

Drops BabyAlpaca Silk is lovely, I'm making a blanket with it right now.

I've also used Drops Baby Merino and is it very nice.

Thank you for all the lovely suggestions - especially keen to see if the Sublime Merino really is as soft as fluffy kittens Americano!

And good point, tribpot I think I'll try and find a pale grey.

Drops merino superwash recommendation here too. It also washes well! I pretty much exclusively use it for making clothes for my grubby children... :)
