dd is going to be 13 soon and is currently obsessed with sewing. She is fairly proficient so I was thinking something along the lines of patterns.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cath Kidston has done some nice sewing books. One of them, I think it's called 'make' comes complete with fabric to make a bag.

I presume you have own sewing machine already?
What kinds of things does she like to sew?
Cannot beat a good pair of scissors.

Thanks for the suggestion MrsMummyPig. Do you know what type of bag it is?

lljkk, yes we do already have a sewing machine. She has recently made bags, shorts, skirts etc. One thing she recently did that she seemed to enjoy was making a quilt, although it took 10 hours and 5 days to complete, and she came out muttering 'never again'.

Has lots of scissors. Can do zips. Anyone know any good top patterns maybe that she could try?

Trip to a nice fabric shop with a generous budget?

MrsMummyPig · 26/08/2015 21:03

I think the bag from cath kidston is a simple tote bag and she sounds like she's a bit more advanced then that Smile
I love the Tilda toy and home decor pattern books and kits but if she's particularly interested in making clothes then I'm afraid I'm not much help there.

Nice fabric and notions. Has she ever been to any of the ICHF sewing shows?

How about a subscription to Love Sewing Magazine? It's a great general sewing magazine and gives some good ideas.

I also subscribe to Sew Today which has a bi-monthly magazine and gives discounts on Vogue, McCalls and Butterick patterns.

A mannequin? Some online fabric shops offer a monthly fat quarter fabric subscription (although that might be aimed at quilters more). A rotary cutter/ruler set if you think she might want to try another quilt.

FannyFanakapan · 27/08/2015 08:38

cutting mat (big one)
Rotary cutter
Good scissors - large and small spring loaded for threads
wrist band pin cushion
good pins - I use flat head/flower head
Set of new needles for the machine
Tape measure
Selection of neutral cottons
selection of fabrics, or a gift card for a fabric shop

A well stocked sewing basket (pins, needles, thimble, scissors, spring loaded tape measure etc) or those tiny drawers from IKEA.

The Great British Sewing Bee books are good as they include patterns and loads of techniques.

Maybe a pattern for some pj's would go down well?
