Shepherd's costume - especially the crook (once I convince DD1 that she's not playing a LEOPARD)

(Seriously - she chose the role on a complete misunderstanding, having never heard the word shepherd before, and I feel sorely tempted to just go with it ..... )

Anyway I have no suitable materials in the house so will have to buy stuff, and will be doing any sewing by hand as I have no machine. MIL has a house full of junk however so I may be able to beg the odd teatowel or something.

Advice from experienced nativity-ers gratefully received

the crook is easy - just unwind a wire hanger and then bend as you need -
Towelling dressing gowns and striped pyjama pants!

PanicPants · 17/11/2006 17:11

..and tea towel around the head..

Tesco have ready-made shepherd's costumes - which made me feel a bit sad, actually, but it means you can just nip in there and buy one. It has a foam crook.

PMSL at Leopard. That's what ds2 told me he was this year.

iota · 17/11/2006 20:06

oh do make her a leopard costume - it would be fab abd liven up the nativity

franch · 17/11/2006 20:16

Ooh, stop tempting me, I'd love to do it out of sheer devilment

I have a saffron tabard plus matching checked tea towel for the head dress as worn by DS2 in his starring role as the Sleepy Shepherd and then by NotQuiteCockney's DS (I think!) last year. You can borrow it if you like - just needs neutral trousers/top and a cord to tie round the headdress. iamsoupdragon at blueyonder dot co dot uk

Oh thanks for the advice about Asda doing shepherd costumes. Any idea what size they go up to?

I am going to be insufferably smug here but I have to tell you: my dd has been chosen for the starring role in her nativity: she is "The Sleepy Shepherd" (That's the title of the production) and I want her to have a costume to match the occasion.

DumbledoresGirl · 18/11/2006 21:42

Ooh Soupy, just read your post! Now my dd makes it three in a row for Mner Sleepy Shepherds!

NotSoupyOhNoNoNoShesOnABreak · 18/11/2006 21:46

I'm not sure if NQCs was a sleepy one . DS was though and he was hilarious! I've kept the little slip they sent home saying he was the sleepy shepherd.

If Franch doesn't want the costume would you like to borrow it? Provided your DD is around 4!!

DumbledoresGirl · 18/11/2006 21:48

No dd is 6 unfortunately and I have received a tediously strict letter about what she can wear!

DumbledoresGirl · 18/11/2006 21:48

But thanks for offering.

NotSoupyOhNoNoNoShesOnABreak · 18/11/2006 21:49

It's a shepherd ffs - what do they think she's going to wear??

DumbledoresGirl · 18/11/2006 21:54

It specifies a long tunic and belt. I suppose they have an eye to a child showing her knickers when she sits down.

franch · 19/11/2006 05:41

soupy thanks SO much - have emailed you
