Can we make a list of brilliant yarn shops?

I am on the hunt for a good yarn shop near me in south derbyshire.

All the ones I've found so far either stock meh colours or squeaky acrylics and are definitely stuck in a time warp! Hmm

So, by the power of mumsnet, could we make a list of brilliant yarn shops, where they are and maybe what sort of stuff they have.

Afraid I can't add anything to the list though! Confused Blush

Nest in Crouch End has a lovely mix of both cheaper and expensive yarns.

Yarn Cake, in Glasgow, on Queen Margaret Drive. It is small, but has a good range of yarns, especially Drops, and they make and sell their own cakes in their little cafe.

Yarn and cake - what more do you want?

There is (or used to be) a bad yarn shop in Glasgow, where the owner doesn't let you touch the yarn, and refuses to sell you a pattern, unless you buy the yarn to go with it.

Emms in Droitwich (Worcestershire) is fab - Rowan, Debbie Bliss and King Cole + loads of buttons. They have a fabric shop next door too where they hold workshops. There is a great child friendly cafe called The Button Tree down the road from it too!

I am in Spain so would really welcome any online recommendations.

Hookawoolly @ Ellie Magpie in Prestwich, Manchester. Stocks some lovely British Wools by West Yorkshire Spinners and Excelana by Susan Crawford Vintage..... :)
(also found online at FB and IG - look for Hookawoolly)

There's a lovely little shop in Coleshill - can't for the life of me recall its name at the mo - sells antique-y stuff and quite a few different yarn brands including Stylecraft.

And The Yarn Sanctuary at Chilbets Coton Craft Centre, Nuneaton, run by Jane.

Is Sheepish still in York? I used to like going in to stroke the pretty things.

Get Knitted in Bristol
(I live in south London and have never visited it, but they are so helpful over the phone and the mail order service is speedy and quick :)

Hoop in Tenterden, Kent
Lovely shop, loads of lovely wool, workshops

Little Woolies, Shortlands, Bromley, South London
Workshops, wools and you can drop in and knit and eat cake and drink coffee :)

I went to Woolmouse in Barnard Castle last week, it was lovely, lots of hand dyes and local wools.

PurpleDaisies · 28/08/2015 22:37

I'll add Knitting Pretty in Knaresborough. I had to be dragged out kicking and screaming, trying to bring some beautiful soft purple alpaca yarn with me. Small but perfectly formed.

Stitch in Solihull is tiny but lovely. It's in a little cabin in the grounds of the Notcutts garden centre. V handy for the M42 so quite doable from south Derbyshire!

Bicester Wools (in Bicester!) are great. Really helpful and have a great range of yarn and patterns. Last time I went in I even managed to get enough yarn to knit a cardigan in the sale so two patterns and yarn cost me less than £15.

nutmegandginger · 09/10/2015 22:48

I recommend the Oxford Yarn Store in Oxford. Huge selection of yarns and really lovely owner. Lots of classes and workshops too, and knit club twice a week, really welcoming atmosphere.

Loop in Islington is great too and has really good stock, though I've only been there one.

WellyMummy · 09/10/2015 22:54

The Wool Croft in Abergavenny, it's just won an award for its yarn range.

Lambbone · 09/10/2015 23:00

The Fluffatorium in Dorking is lovely.

Great name too!

auberginesrus · 09/10/2015 23:09

I was a bit disappointed with Loop when I made the effort to go there (I was in London for a meeting that finished early). It's very small - it had some lovely yarn but v expensive. There is a shop in Marple, near Stockport called the Sew Inn that does haberdashery and wool, it's blumming dangerous. I noticed one has opened in Cheadle too but haven't ventured in yet.
Was in York a couple of weeks ago, lovely wool shop on the Shambles called Ramshambles with a brilliant selection.
