I want to make an overlay for a bodice

For my version of Cinderella.

Will it work if I trace the front twice, remove the cf seam allowance, stick the two pieces together as one and cut as a single piece of satin and then carry on constructing the bodice with a single front piece plus whatever shimmery blue I find for the overlay?

It works in my head, just need someone to confirm it before I plough on Grin

Hello Lucysmam

I think I understand what you have written, just making a two piece front bodice on a fold and excluding the seam allowance. Cutting it out twice, once in satin and once in a sheer shimmery number. Then sewing the overlay on the top? Is that it.

Would you lose any shaping on the front bodice sections by omitting the seam? If not then I would give it a go (but you know that I have that sort of attitude to most things - I carry on regardless generally Smile).

What are the advantages of losing the seam do you think?

I suppose if you lost some shaping you could always think up an appropriately sized dart (or not).

Hello! Smile

Yes, that's exactly what I meant!

The bodice on the pattern has a seam at cf but I think a single piece will look better for the overlay at least.

I want to make something that vaguely resembles Cinderella's ballgown in the new film rather than her usual blue gown.

I don't think there's much shaping to it really, there are only four pieces to the bodice if I make it as per the instructions & neither of the pieces on the pattern itself look to have much shape.

I'll give it a whirl in bedding over the weekend, cut an overlay from an old net curtain and see how it goes.
