Have any of you ever done a French seam on a set in sleeve?

I'm making sleeves out of voile. No problem in itself but I'm wondering about the best way to finish them so they're neat and wearable.

Has anyone tried a French seam on a set in sleeve? I might have a go tomorrow just to try it but just wondering about others' experiences

(lots of wondering going on there Grin )

Yes - I do them almost always, everywhere, sleeves included. As long as you manage it within your original seam allowance and the pattern is well drafted it is fine. I usually use a narrow patchwork foot so I know that I am in the right place.

I am wearing the dress I made myself at the weekend today - french seams all over, it is so nice I am aiming to make myself another one before Sunday!

They're for the Elsa dresses I'm doing.

I might have a trial run on some old bedding and then in voile before I commit (should that have two t's?) to doing them in the actual dresses.

Seam allowance is 1.5cm all over - French seams would make that look neater & solve me the problem of how to make it look presentable.

If you google 'french seam set in sleeve' all sorts of tutorials come up, I haven't watched/read any of them but there might be some tips.

I sew two rows of basting stitches close to the edge and press my sleeve on a ham before I do anything else. They usually go in perfectly, very easily. I think that the ham makes a huge difference, it looks like a sleeve at the top before it goes in, obviously you are just doing it wrong side out with a narrow hem before doing it again.

You will be surprised at how easy it is.

I'll have a google and see what I can find. Thanks lavender Smile

French seams are the way to go I think! Have had a look at some tutorials & saved a few youtube videos to watch before I go for it in the morning.

Thanks for your help earlier lavender, much appreciated as always Thanks

They are lovely lucysmam, really finished. I noticed when I was ironing to go away just before easter that my 'nice', shop boughtclothes had french seams, wasn't sure I had noticed that before.

Report back later and let us know how it goes.

Ok, here is a photo lucysmam. Finished seam measures 7mm. I would have done the same on the inside before trimming it down to 4mm ish.

No problems though, even where there is a lined yoke.

When you do the first seam remember to clip it so you are able to ease it when you see your second seam.

Latte! Thank you! I've been huffing and puffing at my trial run for most of the day & blaming the voile which is a bit fall apart ish now Blush

I'll go again in the morning & try clipping it this time.

I don't clip Grin, my seam is so small when it is trimmed I don't feel the need to and with my failing eyesight I find 4mm as close as I want to go!
