How much to charge?

How much, on top of the wool, should I ask for making a friend a jumper?
She asked last week if I would knit her a Guernsey-type jumper. I know she will pay, but the wool will be fairly expensive, I think. We all know that if I charge by the hour it would be ridiculously expensive. I am happy to make her something and don't want to make a huge profit but it would be nice to have a bit of extra to buy more wool with. How much do you reckon?

If I were to charge by the hour it would cost a fortune Grin but how about pricing up the wool, then charge her the same again so you could have something similar I think that seems fair.

I gave up the idea of getting paid for the making of any knitting and have charged (in advance) of the wool. I say that I knit for love, not for money. So I have had flowers, books, chocolates, cds and this has been far more precious to me than any money could be. If there is something specific you would like, you could maybe ask your friend to give you enough money to buy that.

I recently did a crocheted alpaca wrap for a friend - like you, couldn't justify charging wool + 12hrs labour so I just doubled the cost of the wool.
