Knitting help needed for a beginner!

I am looking for some advice re knitting, I can do a basic knit stitch and my biggest project so far has been a scarf! I am expecting a baby and would like to knit something nice as a keepsake and was thinking a blanket, I have some nice soft wool but want to know if just a wider version of my scarf in a knit stitch will be suitable?

Any opinions/advice greatly appreciated

thanks

You might find it a bit difficult to keep all those stitches on your needles, even with a circular one. It could get quite heavy as well as it grows. How about knitting smaller squares and then sewing them together to make the blanket. You could use different colours too.

As above. Knit small squares and see them together. Do you have an independent knitting shop near you? They can be really helpful. Ours has classes for beginners. Look online too, u tube is good for quick guidance x

That is a great idea I hadn't thought to do that. I will give it a go!

Actually a nice newborn cardi would be a great keepsake, and more instantly rewarding than a blanket - plus you'll probably learn some new skills in the process. I started knitting from Debbie Bliss's "Baby Knits For Beginners". Some lovely patterns, and lots of clear instructions.

(I'm slightly biased because my mum gave me some of the baby cardigans that she knitted for me when I was a baby. My two daughters have both worn them, and hopefully they will be passed on again some day, along with some of my own)

Sewing squares together is my idea of hell.

I'm currently knitting a ripple blanket (pattern from ravelry) with 144 stitches and it is quite simple.

Yes, I would knit it in one piece as well, although if you are a beginner it will take a long time, there's no way round that.

The garter ripple squish is lovely - the other thought i had was Gacoco, as this is modular. So you could start with just a small pram cover and then build up to a bigger blanket over time.
