Crochet hook on a plane?

lagartaroja · 23/03/2015 05:47

Anyone know if I can take one on a plane? I know knitting needles are out but a hook is less offensive than a pen... Surely?!

Would a plastic handled one be better than an aluminium one?

Actually according to the government knitting needles are allowed (and the same statement applies in the US but there appears to be discretion by individual airport security / the airlines (although not sure how the airlines can enforce it when they have nothing to do with your bags being screened).

As no-one wants to lose a knitting project just before a potentially lengthy flight, I am going for crochet this summer. I know a number of people who've had no problems carrying crochet hooks on to a flight, although just as a bit of extra thoroughness I'm going to use a bamboo hook so the metal doesn't set any alarm bells ringing (poss literally!)

Just to compare and contrast, Heathrow says yes to knitting needles and Leeds Bradford (where I am flying from!) says no. Illogical.

I've taken both on planes. I take my knitting on interchangeable needles and put the ends in a pencil case. I've never even been asked about it at security. I've flown from Leeds Bradford too.

Ah ok. I thought I'd seen knitting needles on that chart they make you look at to confirm you're not carrying any dodgy items.

I'm using a bamboo hook in my project so I'll chance my arm then.

Thanks!

I take bamboo ones and have never had a problem. I've also taken a metal one before with no problem.

Nail clippers are great for cutting the yarn if taking scissors is a problem.

Thistledew · 23/03/2015 07:27

I flew recently with bamboo hooks with no problem at all. Ditto advice re nail clippers for cutting yarn

i know of people who have taken knitting on flights.

I often wonder if they look at the pattern and see how advanced or complex it is....

3 rows of ribbing...nah, that's not coming on, you're up to no good with those potential eye pokers

toe up sock, heel turned, and up the leg cable pattern, take your seat no one is going to waste all that time by wrenching those needles out

Bamboo hooks/needles is a great idea though.

DH had his nail clippers confiscated once. I have no idea what they thought he was going to do with them!

Have taken bamboo needles and metal crochet hooks via Heathrow. No problems.

lagartaroja · 24/03/2015 06:19

Well, my bamboo hook made it through! Smile

Thanks all!
