I have found some lovely co-ordinating striped and spotty material, which I have bought, with the idea of making some seating cushions.

The thing is, it is quilting fabric so not as robust as I would ideally want (but the colours are lovely) ... Now, I was thinking I could make them and spray them with Scotchguard to stop staining.

Is this a mad idea? I would use them inside on my dining chairs so shouldn't get too messy (unless food is dropped on them...)

What do you think?

If it quilting fabric it will wash so I wouldn't worry about staining, Scotchguard won't make the fabric more robust (like upholstery fabric).

I would use something more appropriate underneath, even a decent curtain lining fabric will add strength and a bit of structure - so I would sew two layers effectively. Just make sure that they have the same washing tolerance.

That's a great tip, thanks lavendersun. So do I just layer it and sew it once, if you see what I mean (i.e. as it it was just one piece of fabric)?

I would pin each top and lining piece together and sew a line of stitching very close to the edge - within what will be your seam allowance so you won't see itwhen you sew them together.

That way you know that they are well anchored and won't move once you start sewing the actual cushions.

Great, thanks!

I have only started sewing recently (hence my purchase of unsuitable material...) and am thankful for any advice.

Good luck - I am sure someone else will have another idea! The good thing is that there are no rules Grin.
