Which knitting tools?

Calling all knitters out there, of all levels —I am doing a small research for a personal project.

Which tools do you find most useful when you knit?

Stitch library
Row counter
Conversion tools
Pattern reader
Gauge calculator...

Also, anything not on that list?

Thanks a lot!

I have never used any of those things!

Not on list:
iPhone to look at patterns on ravelry and make notes
Yarn cutter
Occasionally stitch markers (but usually use odd bits of different coloured yarn)

Stitch holder
Cable needle
Pencil

Yes, what is this 'stitch library', 'row counter', 'conversion tools' etc of which you speak? I just have 'the internet'. Wink

In fairness, I rarely use a row counter, when I do I either keep a note in a text file on my phone/laptop or I do have an app. Patterns are all electronic. Gauge calculator - this is one's own ability to count, n'est-ce pas?

Conversion tools - dunno what this would be for, but Wikipedia has all the answers.

I do have:

  • scissors (hundreds of pairs of them)
  • tape measures (ditto)
  • stitch markers (er .. ditto)
  • yarn swift
  • yarn winder

I own some cable needles but never use them, being an advocate of cabling without a cable needle.

I also have a needle sizer thingy, i.e. with graded holes in that you jab the needle through trying to work out what size it is. I rarely use it, however, as all the needles I've bought recently come with the size printed somewhere on them, either the needle itself or the cable.

Whiskersnkittens · 14/03/2015 17:42

Thank you all! I must confess I haven't held a needle in my life :) so I don't really know what most of these are. It's all for a fun experiment.

@tribpot, which sites in the Internet?

Which of these tools can be found online (not to buy), but as services on websites or apps? For example, the gauge calculator app.

Would something like this be useful for most knitters?

Needles, yarn, pencil and paper for keep track of rows. That's it.

Yes occasionally I use the other stuff - tape measure obviously but often things don't need measuring that often, and I have stitch library books but I don't need them.

PomeralLights · 16/03/2015 20:35

I use my two books that constitute my 'stitch library' quite a lot. Also stitch holders are a must for me as I only make garments.
I use my clicker row counter all the time, I find it quicker than noting with pen and paper or an app.
Cable needle, and tape measure very useful as well.
What's a pattern reader?

lurkerspeaks · 17/03/2015 00:43

Row counter on phone.
Embroidery scissors
Wool needle
6mm o- rings for lace
"Pretty"stitch markers (currently lego heads) for end of row marking etc
Interchangeable needle set.
Small tape measure.
Double ended highlighter pen for marking my chart.

I routinely carry all of that except my interchangeable set. It all fits in 6"x4" pouch.

lurkerspeaks · 17/03/2015 00:43

At home a swift /winder are nice to have but you can do without.

Callmecordelia · 17/03/2015 07:23

Interchangeable needles
Row counter app on phone
Basic Kindle for reading pdf patterns that lives in my knitting bag
Needle gauge because none of my needle tips have the size written on them
Tape measure
Stitch markers - lots
Needles in various sizes for darning ends.

Jinglebells99 · 17/03/2015 07:32

Round the neck clicky stitch marker, stitch markers that open and close like a safety pin, yarn needle for sewing up, crochet hook for picking up dropped stitches, interchangeable round needles, ravelry website, small scissors, tweezers for stuffing, safety eyes. Chart minder not useful for me. Couldn't really see what it was supposed to do? Is it for keeping track of where you are in a pattern?

ViccyMan2 · 17/03/2015 13:59

I have a knitting bag, size of small make-up bag, that contains:

row counters
measuring tape
stitch holders
note pad
pencils
cable needles
rubber
stitch markers
sewing needles
gauge ruler
scissors
knitting pins
photo copy of pattern
