Easy Patchwork Strip Quilt - tutorial by Zing

ZingNinjaRoll · 02/03/2015 16:59

I will show you the simplest way to make a pretty paychwork strip quilt - don't worry, no nudity is required!Grin

you will need:

  • sewing machine & threads
  • fabric scissors
  • 100% dressweight cotton fabrics (I use shirting fabric and pillowcases as well, saving the good bits)
  • ruler

I recommend using:

  • a 1/4" foot on the machine that saves pinning fabrics together and will give a consistent seam allowance.
you can make do without it (I'll show you how) but I wouldn't be without mine.
  • cutting mat
  • long cutting ruler
  • rotary cutter
you can cut out patches by hand, but it's boring and those 3 will save a massive amount of time! (if you don't have them and no desire to invest, see if you can borrow them. if you think you want to make more blankets in the future they are worth every penny!)

I'll show you how to make a 24" square quilted patchwork blanket that fits the criteria of a Billie Blanket for Woolly Hugs.

but the beauty of this method is that you can make any blankets of any size or shape, whatever your heart desires!

Brew first Wink

Thank you. How is Babyzing?

lucysmam · 03/03/2015 17:17

ooooh thank you! I like interesting post Grin

newtothenet · 03/03/2015 20:17

I'm following to! I hand stitched a single bed sized hexagon patchwork quilt for DD1 (due to lack of sewing machine confidence). It took over a year and I vowed never to make another. However now DD2 has come along, and this looks like something I could manage, it would be unfair on her not to make one of these!

nutellawithbananas · 03/03/2015 20:27

Have just finished a quilt for my DD's first bed - would have loved this a few months ago! Muddled through anyway and really pleased - made it out of her first babygros and vests so very sentimental. Anyway will watch for future tips as will probably do something again in future (ttc at the moment!)

newtothenet · 18/03/2015 20:09

I just wondered if this thread has moved somewhere else, or just stalled? I was so looking forward to learning how to make a simple quilt!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 18/03/2015 20:26

oh I'm so sorry, I haven't been able to sew at all for last 2 weeks.
life is conspiring against me.Sad sick kids and busted arm/shoulder prevented me from carrying on.

but I haven't forgotten my promise. I will do my best to carry on asap - so gather your tools, chop your fabrics to different widths of your liking and we will get on with this.

Smile
fannyfanakapan · 18/03/2015 20:57

zing! SOrry to hear about your shoulder. I am intrigued to see your rolls of fabric and how you intend to use them!

newtothenet · 19/03/2015 07:12

Sorry you're having a rough time Zing. I've been dithering about posting for a few days now. I didn't want to pester you but, then again, I didn't want you to think everyone had lost interest. Hope you're better and back to normal soon, and I'll look forward to carrying on whenever you're ready!

jaynebxl · 19/03/2015 07:17

Looking good. Hope you're all ok and back to posting again soon.

Mocker · 21/03/2015 19:05

Hello! Can I join too? I am a newbie sew-er with a few projects to do. Seat cushions, cushions for living room and a table runner. (Actually I have loads planned but that's what I have bought material for!)

Can I ask a (perhaps) a really stupid question? What size cutting mat do you have (or do I need) and is there anything I need to know about rotary cutters before I order one?

Thanks.

fannyfanakapan · 21/03/2015 20:15

mocker, I got a HUGE cutting mat (36 inch wide) but I use it all the time. It lives behind the sofa when I'm not sewing. I had a smaller one (A3 size) but never used it because the bigger one was better for me.

rotary cutter - I have an OLFA 45mm, and its great.

Mocker · 21/03/2015 20:37

Thanks fanny. Makes sense to get a big one. It's so hard when you don;t sew yet...

And yes, I saw a previous thread about rotary cutters (after posting) and see that OLFA's come highly recommended.

Perfect. Thanks!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/03/2015 20:43

my cutting mat is 24" Ã?18" from memory.

shoulder is better and although I don't like promising anything, I am planning to add more photos and explanations tomorrow.

(just in case I'm not as "well-known" as I imagine to be Wink Grin I'd like to add that we have 7 kids and just not enough time for anything! but this is going to happen. 4 weeks till Billie Blankets posting deadline for Ghana so it's got to be done)

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/03/2015 20:44

I have an Olfa 45mm as well, just put a new blade in - so much more fun to cut with a tool that works well

RedKites · 21/03/2015 20:57

Hello, this looks a lovely idea. Please could I ask how good a sewing machine you would need for this? I've got a fairly basic one that says it is suitable for light to medium weight fabrics . Would that be good enough, or would it struggle with the layers when you put it together? Thanks.

lucysmam · 21/03/2015 21:40

Hello, hello! Smile

Zing, not seen you about for a few days! (or seen pics on wh fb updates of recovered squares Sad ).

Red, your machine will be just fine I imagine. My incredibly basic £25 from Netto machine will sew five layers of satin/polycotton/lining (sleeping beauty) without much huffing and puffing. I've been looking at the JL ones (in plum Grin ) to upgrade to actually.

Zing, my notebook and screenshotting fingers are at the ready whenever you are Grin (is baby zing feeling better btw?)

I've found a load of outgrown party dresses in a suitcase in the garage so might make use of those for this project in amongst some of the other bits I loved too much to get rid of.

lucysmam · 21/03/2015 21:44

It doesn't come in plum any more! Shock

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/03/2015 05:40

lucy i updated that thread on Wednesday evening after Pistey Pmd me that the squares had just arrived! yay!
BabyZing is better thank you, but now ZingLad is not well. i think he has tonsillitis. boo to that

lucysmam · 22/03/2015 08:18

Oooh Zing, you were up early! It's a never ending round of sickness sometimes isn't it?

I saw the update on your parcel thread, there's usually photo's on fb but I haven't spied yours.

petitcouchon · 22/03/2015 21:36

Hello, can I join? Have sewn a few things things, not patchwork before but would love to have a go. Will follow your instructions, and await for more. Brilliant thread, thanks! Grin

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/03/2015 21:40

all is welcome petitSmile
