Sewing machines.

I had a cheapy John Lewis own brand sewing machine, which saw me through a few crafty projects but never worked brilliantly. I've now been getting into making clothes for my DD and really enjoying it. However, today I have managed to break my sewing machine! The needle is completely stuck, DH has looked and fiddled with it, but to no avail. It's dead.
So, now I am looking for a new machine but fairly clueless. I can't afford much, and don't need anything fancy - I'll just be making baby clothes. I want something that can deal with any fabrics though.
Any recommendations?

janome are the most reliable, this is a great machine www.johnlewis.com/janome-excel-5024-sewing-machine/p231340607

I would suggest a free arm, where some of the sewing platform can come away, for baby clothes

Thanks for the suggestions! Seems Janome is the make to go for? I'm so clueless with this stuff!

Have a look around-and be clear on what you want and your budget
I have always found SMD in the link to be helpful- I am sure the same can be said for John Lewis.
Janome Elna are the same and they make John Lewis Machines, they also make machines for SMD

Husqvarna are getting better after a trough

Frisster and Rossman are OK

It really depends on budgets and wants

I went into John Lewis today and there was no one around that I could see to ask!
I don't want anything too fancy and complicated. It's mainly to make baby/childrens clothes, although I do plan to try making a patchwork quilt in a couple of years - out of DD's baby clothes. I don't have a lot to spend, but equally want something good quality.

I just came on here to ask the same question and saw you thread!

I'm looking for exactly the same reasons. I've got a small budget of £100 maximum. Any suggestions on the best one in that price range. Would prefer a free arm too!

I already mentionned it before, but the best sewing machine ever: vintage. Got mine for free though the local adds. Easy to work with, unkillable, easy peasy to repair. Reliable.
You might not find one for free, but they are not expensive.

Most machines have a free arm, at £100 the John Lewis basic is a good starting point and the Janome I posted above is brilliant, has a free arm and a metal frame.
