i am a complete sewing novice, but i'm looking into making little things from fat quarters, toys, animals, little tote bags, maybe even some quilts.

but my hand stitching takes too long, so i'm looking for a sewing machine.

i want something simple to use, not too expensive, but will do a good job.

Help?

How much is your budget?

ImBatDog · 26/01/2015 10:44

i'm willing to spend up to about £100 most likely.

John Lewis does a good basic one at that level; they are usually reliable

I've heard great things about the John Lewis machine that is £100. It's made by Janome so a good brand and will allow you to do most things, including changing feet which I think is important. If you get a simpler one and you start picking up the sewing a bit more, you'll have limited yourself. Plus the cheaper ones aren't great at quilting.

I think there's also a Singer in the same price bracket that gets great reviews but I've not used a Singer so can't comment!

Marking place. Looking for one myself.

I have just bought a janome basic for £50 from hobby craft. It is brilliant. It does straight and zig zag stitch and reverse stitch. It is easy to thread and operate. I started patchwork just before Xmas and it perfect for this.

Plus there is a you tube video showing you how to thread it.

I have sewn regularly on 2 machines: a new machine that costed $$$ and needs to be repaired regularly and a 1954 singer that works perfectly each time. It does not have a thousand functions so not great if you use them, but I never do anyway. I found mine for free on the local adds, but even if you buy one they are still cheap and the system is so simple that even though I know nothing about machines with the help of the instruction manual I knew how to clean all the parts and have it sew like it just came out of the factory!
