Do I need a sewing machine for roman blind kit?

I have some really nice fabric which is like to make into blinds.

I have no sewing machine (and absolutely no sewing experience Smile).

Could I use a roman blind kit or do you need a sewing machine with these?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

I've never made one but my SIL has. There was definately sewing involved but I'm not sure how much or how complicated. She used a machine but it may be possible to hand sew. Have you looked on YouTube? There's probably a tutorial somewhere on there that will tell you what you need to know.

Depends what is in the kit . I've made them from scratch and used a machine but have seen instructions where the tapes can attached with iron on webbing like wonder web. You might still need to add rings by hand though.

Depends what sort of kit it is.

I always make mine with a lining fabric which is used to create the tunnels that the rods go through, so it's useful to have a sewing machine for those.

The rest is usually hand sewing.

Thank you Smile

I have recently made two roman blinds (and I'm a sewing novice ) and would say a sewing machine is essential - hand sewing would have taken me ages and looked too messy. The kits are fiddly but not difficult. Also they cost so much less - I have saved around £400 doing them myself! Good luck with your project!

It is possible to hand sew the actual blind...its the channels that would be trickier...not impossible to hand sew them (if you were doing channels in the lining) or you can get tape for the channels but would still have to sew them on.

Stick on velcro could be used for the top but not sure how well this would hold

Could anybody tell me what's the best kit to get (eg easy to use!) as there are lots of different types it seems?

I would get a roller chain kit. Plastic ball chain cheapest. like here

I've made up a blind with a pull cord kit but it is horrible to use, get stuck. Oldfashioned style with just cords and eyes is good but not so safe these days.

Can you borrow a sewing machine for a few days? You do save a lot of money so it might be worth £100 for a basic machine, then you have the wonderful world of sewing Grin

Ah thank you so much. My mum is going to teach me sewing machine basics over Easter when we're up visiting and then a neighbour is going to let me use hers to actually do it.

Quite excited Grin
