Using youtube or such like? I have made a resolution to learn next year and want to get started but wondered if anyone has had any success or if I need to find someone tI show me in person?

Yes - but only as far as the basics. Simply because I'm too fickle and start something then on to something else.

I used YouTube.

Yes, I did n YouTube. I can now do most things and knit daily. One you learn to knit and purl you have a basis to knit lots!

Yes I have. I got a patons book (will look up the title in a mo) with simple instructions and patterns in and started off with hats. Then used YouTube or knitting websites to look up specific things I didn't follow. I've been knitting about 5 years now and an reasonably proficient - but slow!

Here's the book I used -

I'd recommend it, it uses quite chunky wool so you get quicker results and I found it very useful to have clear diagrams in front of me when I was getting going.

I learned from a book, which is handy because books tell you the ways to rescue mistakes which you might not think to google if you are learning from youtube. You will probably also want to sign up to Ravelry, which is a sort of international mumsnet for knitters and crocheted.

Thanks, will check out those links. I am fairly good at crafts, but have had no success with knitting so far - determined to have another go and master it this time!

I'd look at the Knitfreedom videos - very clear and well-explained. However, if you do want any real life help, you can always pop in and ask at your local yarn shop (they generally will help any knitter in need, you don't have to buy anything! and btw this includes Hobbycraft that you wouldn't necessarily think of as employing craft experts). Or just give a shout-out on here, there's bound to be someone near you who could meet up for a quick tutorial.

Your local yarn shop may also do 'Learn to Knit' courses, mine does.

If you want a simple project to get going with, you could always contribute to one of the Woolly Hugs.

Crocheting - not knitting. I used crocheting for dummies, which was available online. It went well, so I should imagine that knitting can be learnt this way too. Good luck!

Look at wool and the hand web page, good tutorial links to Pinterest I think
