If you've ever wanted to learn to cut mounts and make picture frames...

I went on a course last weekend run by DIY Framing . £99 + VAT.

It was great fun. We learnt to mark up and cut a bevelled mount aperture, how to cut glass to size, do mitre joints / clamping / underpinning with v nails etc. and all came back with a limewashed frame we had made with a photo etc. mounted. Looked very professional !

They also have a shop onsite selling tools / supplies to the trade. I have just had a pile of photos enlarged so I think it might be something I pursue as framing on the high street seems to cost a fair bit.

I'm not really an arty person (aside from the gardening and photography IYSWIM) so it was really nice to do something with my hands.

you that's useful to know, is it going to be part of your new business?

I've been looking at some prints online that start at about £8.99 put once you add a frame and one mat they end up at about 75 smackeroonies (I know I could do for less myself, even with a shop bought frame!)

I'm still not sure about the child photography business. Doubt it would make much money tbh, but yes, I think it would be a nice idea to offer framing because (a) high street charges so much (b) off the shelf frames don't always have a good fit for the photos (c) if you buy off the peg you still need to have a mount cut.

I posted a Photobox offer a while back, which was a BOGOF on enlargements. They also have price breaks at 5, 10 and 20 prints IIRC, so I ordered 40 enlargements (some for me, some for family, different sizes) and this made the printing MUCH more affordable. I had some framed for FIL's bday but the framing was £25 each from a (cheap) local bloke... I'm not going to pay £1K to get the rest frames, so I suppose it's time to get some equipment LOL !

Glad you enjoyed it. It's nice to make anything really, sense of achievment. Now supposing you were to start cardmaking....scrapbooking...or is that too girly?

erm... I think I'll stick to the chopping and gluing and sharp blades and manly things like PICTURE FRAMING

Are you selling the frames?

Have had marketing talks on photography -- they (bigger companies than I) had market researchers stopping people on the street. By and large the perceived value of a framed print was well over ten times higher than that of a loose print.
