Making quilts from old baby clothes...

I've made two for my own DDs out of their old summer frocks and my neighbour admired them...I said I'd make her one (for free) and then she fetched round some baby clothes...but they're all the t shirt type things.

Is there some way I can do something with these? I'm a bit but she said she has no cotton things at all...she looked a bit :( when I said it might be hard...

Can you bondaweb/interface them to make them more 'sewable', as they'll be stiffer. Or maybe appliqué onto cotton?

You need to stabilise the knit fabric so it won't stretch as you sew. A lightweight fusible interfacing would do the job. You will also need to use a jersey or ball point needle.

I would suggest you make up the quilt with blocks of the knit fabric and cotton sashing around them to add stability.

Thank you....I could try...what do you mean by "cotton sashing" Minne My "Quilts" are basic at best! All I do is sew a load of squares together and then put batting and a back on it...the edges I just bias bind.

Sashing is cotton strips arranged as a frame around your patchwork squares. So instead of your quilt being made of just your squares sewn together you arrange them in groups and sew a strip of cotton between each group. I think if all the material your neighbour is giving you is tee shirt type cloth then the end result could be very stretchy if you just sew the squares together.

I made one out of my nephews baby gros.

I just sewed patchwork squares of fabric, the trick is to quilt it in fairly close stitching so it doesn't stretch.
