(I feel like such a geek btw, knitting and xmas in one thread title... )

Sooo...I am skint and will most likely knit a lot of smallish things for Christmas stocking fillers etc.

Right now I am doing chenille washcloths (after seeing one for sale in the Body Shop for £6) in lovely rich colours. Dead easy. (My MIL loves this kind of thing.)

Would love an easy mitten pattern, stylish not chunky, or interesting hats to do etc. I'm not a beginner anymore but tbh won't do anything that takes a lot of time. One-skein things very attractive.

There's a book by Leigh Radford called "One Skein", I think, and we like her, don't we I'm not sure I've ever seen any stylish mittens (said in best cod voice) but there are some cool gloves in Knitty. Presumably you've looked there? I will keep thinking...

Yes the knitty ones are a bit fiddly for me (I tried the "Knucks" and ripped them, too tangy for me!).
I have seen some Mitred mittens, Elizabeth Zimmerman, that sort of thing.
It more about the yarn, isn't it?
I made this hat with a skein of Noro Iro and it's fantastic.

One Skein . Oooh, and Interweave are doing a special gifts mag, for those people who have everything but like knitted pears .

Pruhoohooohoooooni · 06/10/2006 14:42

fio that looks interesting!

One Skein...mmmmm must get hold of that book, I saw it on her website and thought it'd be good.

Out of interest, can you think of any knitting-related Xmas presents for me?

OP posts:
Pruhoohooohoooooni · 06/10/2006 14:43

Interweave

Tamum I know you have a subscription but where do mere mortals get hold of a copy of that? Borders?

OP posts:
taMummy · 06/10/2006 14:44

Mittens, but not strictly stylish...

I don't actually know where to get the Interweave mag to be honest as it's not part of the subscription. I'm hoping that HK or MacColl's will have it, but Borders would probably be the best bet.

Presents for you? Oh easy. A subscription to Interweave Knits, a set of Denise needles, a gift voucher for HK or GetKnitted or somewhere, a Lantern Moon needles case (drool), Lantern Moon needles.. I could go on

taMummy · 06/10/2006 14:49

Let's try that again, shall we?
A few things here...

Hello fio

Pruhoohooohoooooni · 06/10/2006 14:50

(Do go on, tamum, it feels quite kinky )

Another set of free patterns here - it's quite a comprehensive collection.

Pruhoohooohoooooni · 06/10/2006 14:54

These look nice, is mitring easy? [hopeful]

OP posts:
taMummy · 06/10/2006 14:59

They are nice- I have never knowingly mitred but it looks the same as shoulders on garments knitted in the round, so I should think it would be dead easy. Have you thought about those fingerless gloves in the other Leigh Radford book? I was thinking I might give those a try.

Beaded stitch markers? Knitting notebook with loads of useful information ? I just knitted a hat using the "emergency" pattern in there for dd using banana yarn. Oh yes. It was very uneven but very shiny.

NotQuiteCockney · 06/10/2006 15:01

I think that's just some paired increases and decreases, isn't it?

I want to knit Xmas ornaments. Maybe felt them? Not sure ... Or maybe, I saw a craft project where you take lace and make a fruit bowl thing, by putting latex? Or something? on it, to make it hold its shape ...

maycontainstress · 06/10/2006 15:49

this beauty

would be fantastic if had a pretty fabric lining inside.

There are some very pretty things to make on that site.

I'm getting my needles out.

taMummy · 06/10/2006 15:53

Yes, Berocco is a good site- I think their patterns are contained in the Daily Knitter site too.

NQC, maybe you could adapt the pears into knitted ornaments? You probably don't want a pattern though, do you.

Pruni, hot water bottle covers could be good presents for the right sort of person, and pretty easy to do. I've got some patterns here if you want them. Recycled sari silk can make nice bags too.

LittleScarer · 06/10/2006 16:41

Oh dear! I have just bought that One Skein book now Tamum, and am already doing 3 things at once...

No, no pattern, just need the principle, I guess.

I'm working on my blanket still, though, it is huge, I am now working the border in the round on two giant circulars. The border has ruffles so has a lucicrous number of stitches on it. Nearly done.

PollyLogos · 06/10/2006 18:41

lots of free patterns here!

taMummy · 06/10/2006 18:43

Yes, and they link to another of my favorites- Garnstudio .
