Halloween outfit! Help me make a cloak (or something similar!)

OK. I don't sew. Or knit. Or darn. Or anything remotely crafty, but I've got it into my head that I want to make DS a cloak for his nursery Halloween party.Am I very naive in thinking that this could be quite a simple task if it was just a piece of material somehow gathered at the neck.
Any tips or ideas much appreciated

... am getting very carried away about sewing on moons and stars etc but let's get the basic thing made first!

How old? Just go to a supermarket and buy one!

lucycat · 05/10/2006 16:21

ditto soupy - tesco's have got loads of cheap dressing up stuff in, by the time you've bought the stuff it'll end up costing much more.

and you could get some wine too!

foxtrottingtotransylvania · 05/10/2006 16:27

a black bin liner & some shiny stickers...no, go and buy one.

Iklboo · 05/10/2006 16:27

Old curtain cut down to size? Thread a shoelace through the part where the curtain pole/wire would go.

sarahhal · 05/10/2006 18:03

But I so wanted to make something! I know you are all right about Tesco. Was just inspired whilst out today and saw some remnents of halloween material which set me off. Just a whim I know!

i think it's nicer to make your own, and you won't look like everyone else, i'd go for it!

Sparkler1 · 05/10/2006 18:07

I would say use a black bin liner too

Square of fabric as long as needed for your child.
Length of ribbon, Long enough to go round your child's neck
"wonder web" iron on hemming stuff.

Hem all round the square with the wonderweb
Lay out the ribbon and gather one edge of the cloak along it so there's enough free ribbon at either end to tie (or attach velcro to the ends of the ribbon so it's easy to fasten and releases easily.) Sew the ribbon to the gathered fabric.

I think you have to sew the ribbbony bit on - I don't think the iron on stuff would be strong enough. You'd have to sew on the velcro too - velcro fastening is safer than something that ties.

i am planning to make dd a ladybird outfit. buying a piece of red fleece from ebay. fleece because it doesn't fray and warm. double in half and cut to make a cone shape with a rounded bottom and a rounded neckhole at the top. a bit of velcro maybe instead of ties. will also get some black material, fleece or felt and cut out circles to stick on for the spots.

using the red fleece to make a simple hat using a hat she already has for a pattern. and already have the pipecleaners to make the antennae.

underneath will be a longsleeved bodysuit and tights.

if you want to get fancy, use the black fleece to cut piping to outline the wings. you can use a glue gun for this.

lucycat · 05/10/2006 18:22

oh I love that ladybird idea kiskidee!

my dd is obsessed with them, she'd love that!

taMummy · 05/10/2006 18:35

I made a black velvet one for dd when she was about 3, with appliqued gold and silver stars and moons and it's lasted really well, because obviously they don't have to fit as such. She's wearing it again for Halloween this year and she's 8 now. Worth doing a nice job, I reckon

kiskidee · 05/10/2006 19:20

meant to say fleece doesn't fray when cut and left unhemmed.

iota · 05/10/2006 19:23

I made hallowen cloaks a couple of years ago with halloween fabric that was printed with bats, witches heads etc. Non fray material as well.

have a look in the market/dept stores

iota · 05/10/2006 19:25

it was like this

sarahhal · 07/10/2006 19:05

taMummy that's just what I had in mind.

However... gave in to Sainsbury's today as at £1.50 for a cape it was just rude not to.

So, now I'm not going to be doing wholesome Halloween outfits, let's turn my attention to ..Christmas day. Homemade bread sauce anyone?

we went out today and dh wouldn't leave the shop without a 'little devil' outfit, didn't he. so now dd will have to wait to be a ladybird.
