Im knitting a cardigan for a baby and now im stuck !

The last row i did was fine , pattern said rib to last 29 stitches . cast off one stitch (rib 6 , cast off 1 st) 3 times, rib 3

the next row which i am confused by says
rib 4 , cast on 1 st, (rib 7 , cast on 1 st) 3 times , rib to the end .

so im doing buttonholes here , but ,
where do i cast on ? onto the left needle and then rib the new stitches or do i cast on to the right needle and then rib the stitches on the left ?

if anyone can help me i'd be really grateful ! still got a lot to learn as you can tell !

Taking a bit of a plunge here but I'm fairly sure that you cast on to the right needle and rib the stitches on the left needle.

Which part of the pattern is this?

Assuming you are right handed...

You can either use two needles:

Start the row as normal. When you get to your first cast on stitch transfer your right hand needle to your left hand. Take your other (empty) needle and put the point in between the first and second stitches. Wrap the yarn around the tip of the needle as if you were knitting the stitch. Pull through as normal. (You have one stitch on your formerly empty needle). Transfer this to the left hand needle. Swap needles back into the usual hands for knitting and continue as normal to the next cast on point. Repeat until you have cast on over all your spaces.

One needle method:

You can use the thumb method to cast on - wrap yarn around left thumb. Poke right hand needle through the thumb loop. Wrap yarn around right hand needle like you are knitting a stitch. Pull through thumb loop and pull yarn tight to secure stitch. This is a simple way to do it but can make the new stitch quite big and it only becomes apparent when you knit the next row. It is invisible when the garment is buttoned though.

I'll try to find YouTube clips to show you the two methods...

Glad you got it sorted.

I often do backwards loop cast on in those circumstances...
