Oh come all you felters...

I've just started needle felting 3d models and I've picked it up quite quickly. But it seems to be difficult to get much advice on as, unlike other crafts, there doesn't seem to be many practitioners! I'd love to pick the brains of other felters, in particular:

  • where do you buy your roving - core wool/ batting in particular.
  • where do you buy glass eyes (if you do)
  • any recommendations for wool on Amazon!
  • anyone know of any good free tutorials on how to make those waldorf-inspired dolls that are everywhere!!!

And any thing you think a novice might want to know! Thanks :)

I don't do much felting but I do spin. Try Wingham Woolwork for wool (you wouldn't guess from the name would you?), I know that they supply a lot (kilos) to felters. Sorry - that's all I've got.

Have you looked on Pinterest? Try typing in Waldorf felting. There are lots of lovely inspiring designs (be warned Pinterest is addictive!) and some tutorials too. I buy roving in local sewing shops but the best quality is from Myriad but it is expensive. I don't bother with glass eyes and just embroider them.

If you Google 'Waldorf felting tutorial' lots will come up. try this one

I forgot I have sometimes used tiny glass beads for eyes but they are not suitable for little children.

try gilliangladrag.co.uk for awesome felty goodness. also google someone called moxie for some inspirational needle felting ( ifeltawesome.com). when I went to the harrogate knitting and stitching show a few years back (2012?) I was really impressed with the huge amount of wool tops on sale so you might want to check out some larger woolcrafts shows. hobbycraft has also improved supplies of felting stuff over the past few years too.

I have just started also! Hobby craft has some roving and it also has some cheaper packs of 6 colours that are not such good quality but good for some stuff. And toy stuffing to needle felt and then cover with wool. I have just googled and looked at images to get some ideas.
I have made a couple of things for dd and she has done some too. I have been doing some tonight while watching tv, attempting to make this!!
Without buying the expensive kit!!!
