What is strong and light cotton? Confused!

I am doing a sewing course on Sunday and have been asked to bring the following:-

For the tote bag you will need to either bring your own fabric (0.75m of strong cotton and 0.5m lighter cotton for the lining) or purchase the fabric on the day from us at a cost of £10. Please be aware that our choice of fabric is limited. However for the cushion everything will be provided.

I could call and ask them but don't want to sound like an idiot so thought I would ask here first Wink

Personally if your an absolute beginner I'd get quilting weight cotton for the outer and dress making, blouse weight fabric for the lining.

It won't be as hard wearing as the thicker fabric tote bags are often made of, but it will sew nicely, even on straps and thicker bits.

Well, I suppose jeans are made of cotton, and so are floaty cotton nighties! That's how I would understand the difference. (You may be able to tell I am a not a seamstress!)

I would use home dec weight cotton for the exterior eg www.empressmills.co.uk/acatalog/home-sweet-home-fabric.html

and quilting weight fabric for the lining.

You do need a stronger weight for the exterior to give the bag some body.

That's what I'd use Minnies, but in the sure and certain knowledge I'd be using a few rude words and unpicking a tangle of thrown shuttle thread.

I have an elderly machine with manners of a toddler.

I've just re-read your post. Why not purchase the fabric on the day from us at a cost of £10.? Problem solved Smile
