And now I'm looking for a simple, complete beginner's project. I have thread and some pretty fabric remnants. Any suggestions? :)

Ooh. I want one of these. My plan is to make curtains. Is there any chance you could do that? Maybe not with the remnants though.
Erm. Cushion cover perhaps?

Minorchristmascrisis · 01/10/2014 23:03

I started with bunting - it was really easy! I used YouTube tutorials - I'll try to find a link to the one I used...

TheMightyMing · 01/10/2014 23:04

Which sewing machine please? Been thinking about it but don't want to spend loads as a beginner?

Minorchristmascrisis · 01/10/2014 23:04

This is it m.youtube.com/watch?v=HXRE9QlSEFo

The first thing I made was a little lined shopping bag with a button, then a zipped small lined bag. I still keep my sewing bits in them.

This was my attempt...

I think of curtains as advanced tbh, getting a huge piece of fabric squarely seamed and lined is a faff. Unless you mean a voile panel or something!

I would make a shopping bag or a cushion cover for a first project.

Justwhateverreally · 02/10/2014 06:42

Yeah I was going to make voile type floaty light drapes to go over my wooden window blinds. Not proper patterned and lined curtains. Would that be too hard, do you think?

TrousersSchmowsers · 02/10/2014 07:59

It's harder than it looks to make two big pieces of heavy fabric line up perfectly with straight seams. I have made probably 8 sets of curtains from scratch in my life and every time I have been annoyed at the poor end result. Voile panels should be easy peasy though :)

It's the John Lewis £99 one. Mine is duck egg

Yeah I was thinking it would be just two matching sized lengths of fabric, hem hem hem and then work out how to do the loops at the top... Not too hard??

Justwhateverreally · 02/10/2014 09:43

PS. OP, those coloured machines are great, I want one for Christmas, not decided which colour to go for yet though...

SnakeyMcBadass · 02/10/2014 15:27

I made this. The dog hates me.

I have a purple one from John Lewis! It's ace.

I make everyone easy pj bottoms.
Do you have Pinterest? It's great for easy projects.

bberry · 02/10/2014 16:24

Very Easy projects:

Bunting
Envelope style cushion covers

I have a £99 sewing machine bought from free mans catalogue about 10 years ago... It's so good, I have made curtains and blinds fir the whole house and cushions everywhere!!!!

I did a council 4 day course on how to make a roman blind, I finished early so the teacher showed me how to put zips and piping in a cushion and now I can apply the knowledge to most household soft furnishings!!!!

I think I will do a basic dressmaking one next... I Quite fancy being able to make my little girls original dresses/tops etc.....

Sewing is an amazing life skill to have.....

I took the plunge when I bought my sewing machine, and just bought a simple skirt pattern and some fabric I liked. And then I worked through it - took me ages the first time as I had to keep stopping to look up what the instructions actually meant (giving thanks for You Tube), and the sewing was fairly rubbish but the fabric's quite bold so you don't notice it. I figured if I could manage that, I'd try the next thing and so on. I'm still on that journey, but I find it totally therapeutic, very calming!

SnakeyMcBadass · 05/10/2014 09:35

I did this yesterday. Sewing arm cuffs is a tricky bastard. Still, dog has pyjamas.

Hehe, I love that you're starting off by sewing your dog it's own wardrobe Smile

SnakeyMcBadass · 05/10/2014 11:19

Yeah. Bit odd. But I was thinking small and cheap as practice. Love the polar fleece. Might make the DC some pyjamas

Pjs are super easy, I make them for mine all the time when they refuse to stop doing the whole growing thing!

I used this tutorial to start
