I'm looking to buy my first sewing machine. It needs to be idiot proof. Any pointers on brands, costs etc?

Can you please link to it flightywoman

It's the Brother JK 1700 www.johnlewis.com/brother-jk1700-sewing-machine/p955260

I did a comparison thingy with the JL own brand and a Janome, and overall it had a couple of extra things that they other two didn't have.

I have just bought a Brother RL417 second hand (superb condition, looks new really) for £65 from a local selling page. Haven't had th chance to play with it yet, but mother has tested it and everything seems fine, i made a fabric hairband for DD and thats all ive done so far!

Unfortunately I need zig zag stitch and my Singer 1895 hand crank machine can only do straight stitch, so it will be retired to the loft (sentimental reasons really, it was my gran's machine). I found it great for learning though, you can go as fast or slow as you like! Blush

I have bought the singer one from aldi, it is gojng to sell out fast because it went on sale this morning and by the time I got there at 9.30 they were already restocking the shelf and I saw two other people in there buying one at the same time as me. It's no surprise because the exact same model is £290 in argos. I just hope it turns out to better than the buyer reviews on it.
Feel all excited now as this is the first sewing machine I have ever bought as I have only had hand me down ones before and haven't ever had zipper feet or auto button hole functions.
It doesn't take much to excite me Grin

Not aldi - it was from lidl.

I've just bought the Singer one in Lidl too. Didn't realise it cost that much in Argos. Feel ridiculously pleased now!
